SharePoint Team Services is not available as a stand-alone product. It is available in one of three ways.

First, you can purchase Microsoft FrontPage 2002 (with SharePoint Team Services) for $169.95 Full/$89.95 Upgrade.

Second, you can purchase Microsoft Office XP Developer Edition for $799.00 Full/$549.00 Upgrade.

Third, you can purchase Microsoft Office XP Professional Special Edition for $499.00.
 

System Requirements

Computer/Processor
Computer with a Pentium 200-megahertz (MHz) or higher processor
Memory RAM requirements depend on the operating system used:
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM

Hard Disk
Hard disk space requirements will vary depending on configuration; custom installation choices may require more or less hard disk space. Listed below are the minimum hard disk requirements for SharePoint Team Services:
70 MB of available hard disk space
5 MB of available hard disk space for each provisioned Web site

Operating System

Microsoft Windows® XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server with Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 or later, including Internet service and Service Pack 2 (SP2)

You don’t need much to get Team Services site up and running.  In my experience a 400 mhz machine is more than adequate.  As far as scalability we are running close to 20 Team Services based sites on the same machine with close to 100 users, with no noticeable speed degradation.
