Microsoft Passport: Like It or Not? | |

For more than a year, Microsoft has been pushing its Passport identification system -- in which consumers use a single login ID and password to access multiple applications -- as a crucial feature of its .NET platform. Recently, though, the company has begun backing software called "TrustBridge" that will allow businesses to maintain their own user data rather than entrusting it to Microsoft. "Microsoft has moved away from the 'we will maintain it' mentality," Yankee Group analyst Rob Perry told the E-Commerce Times. | ||

| It would be really cool if they integrated something like x.509 digital certificates with passport, or at least gave a user the option to do so. |

X.509 certificates are nice, if and only if, there was a trustworthy registration proces. And that would be difficult for Microsoft.
That is why X.509 client certificates are still not widespread. Also having it as an option is useless, when using X.509 certificates either everyone has to use it, or passport should have 2 logons: basic with login/pw and secured with X.509. |

Um... no. Crucial feature of .NET My Services (which no longer exist), maybe... but .NET doesn't need Passport, nor the other way around. |

Trustbridge: since dumping .Net Services this was their Insurance policy.
.Net Services failed because nobody trust Microsoft to maintain your privacy data. The idea already is funny with so many security leaks in their software. Also it would give them big time trouble with the EU where privacy is much more protected then in the USA and most other countries. Trustbridge lets users and corporations maintain their own data. |

#2 good point on the optional factor ... although how would it be non-trustworthy if all of the information was stored on Microsoft's servers as the passport information is already stored except in an encrypted manner? Or is Passport info not stored that way right now?

.NET MyServices didn't really *fail*, but I can see why you say that. It never really made a debut, so it couldn't fail, it was basically just shelved for the time being...
But you're probably right about the reason behind it... |

| RMD and others. .NET My Services will appear in the upcoming new MSN Services this fall. .NET My Services is alive and well, but has been reduced and moved to a new service/product. |

xavalon - X.509 certificates is what Outlook supports and uses. It's also what Microsoft's certificate server and Exchange key management server creates and it is very easy then to setup a trustworthy registration process for your own internal use. If not... RSA, Thawte and others will provide those certificiates for you. Or you can use a combination of the two so that you can maintain keys which can then be shared with outside firms.
I agree they aren't widespread, but I think that has largely to do with lack of education on what can be done, how to work with them, etc. Also I believe your analysis of why .Net services was dumped is seriously flawed. That's the slashdot mentality, the real issue was that Microsoft had a difficult time obtaining subscribers. That's more a function of uncontrolled cost and availability worries from management. Microsoft has said that they may reintroduce .Net services as a software package that could be installed and maintained by individual businesses. | .NET My Services wasn't exactly "shelved"... just reorged a bit. Many of the HotMail $20/year features were once described as .NET My Services. Many of the XBox LIVE features were once described as .NET My Services. Those ideas live on... |
