The Great Moore's Law Compensator: It's a term I coined more than a year ago to describe the process whereby each successive Windows release effectively gobbles up the latest gains in PC hardware performance. The net result is an environment that performs roughly on par with the one you're upgrading from -- despite the fact that the underlying CPU, chip set, RAM, and I/O subsystems are all at least twice as fast as those in your old rig. | ||

what they heck was that...? is he suggesting that the new office runs better on the OS that he and as he asserts, is crap and everyone hates (Vista) than the new OS that he and others say is good enough (Windows 7)? and uses a benchmarking tool that is likely not capable of properly considering the new Windows? For that matter, all the benchmark testing tools need a serious benchmarking of their own.
What was the point of the piece - to offer criticism of Windows 7 based upon software performance that has not been released yet? Is he nuts? Part of the reason for upgrading hardware is that the hardware is more efficient and uses less power and generates less heat - performance is only one consideration. This is just daffy stuff. Bloat? Again that word. Bloat where? Windows loads whatever its registry is as a single page. It's extremely fast in that context. Just because there are libraries there to support the software one installs and the same is true of drivers, not all possible software and devices are loaded at once - only those one uses. Once installed the page to which the values are written is read as that one very fast page I mentioned a moment ago - vice running all about reading text configuration files. |
