In an interview, Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop said that the browser-based editing capabilities are being developed in conjunction with the next version of Office, known as Office 14. Microsoft won't say when that version will arrive, but Elop said that a technology preview of the browser-based products will come later this year and that a beta version will be released in 2009. | ||

| The million dollar question is will it run freely in the browser without users purchasing the desktop Office 14? |

Thats the 64,000 dollar question on my mind too tuxplorer. The fact that web Office 14 primarily focuses on collaboration and collaboration is usually revolved around Teams, big ones, small ones in organizations, I am gonna bet this wil be for Enterprise customers who purchase SA/EA. Google has been selling their service primarily to Enterprise customers with a lot of seats. With this new initiative, it will make current Microsoft Office customers continue to invest in the platform because they are getting the best of both worlds.
For the average home user, its not detrimental. And Office is not a scarce thing, 10 out 10 pcs run it. If I have to edit a document, I bound to stumble into a PC with Word installed, even if its pirated. |
