If Paul Flessner and his SQL Server team have their way, traditional beta releases may soon be a thing of the past. And they aren't the only Softies who are pushing to overhaul the way Microsoft builds software to more closely emulate the open source process. | ||

I've been doing iterative programming for 20 years starting with 4GL's like Powerhouse. Its kind of pathetic that losers like Latch and the author of this article are trying to claim that it is an "open source" invention.
What a load of crap. |

I think you need to take your meds as the article talks about a process, not an invention, and in the article even MS execs admit they're learning from open source development practices. Did you even read the article, or were you just doing your usual MS cheerleading? |

I somewhat have to agree with #2 here. The CTPs are more or less the revival of the interim builds we used to get pretty regularly, particularly on Windows betas, though IIRC, they go through more quality gates. The Vista CTPs have actually been on a slower release schedule than the interim builds were, however, and take longer to get to technical testers, which is kind of frustrating if there's a major issue that keeps you from testing a particular build. Going to a pure CTP process seems more flexible though, and it'd be interesting if there were no more major milestone builds at all. It might be trickier handling the supported upgrade scenario for Windows, which used to be milestone to milestone to RTM. This post was edited by n4cer on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at 15:54. |

Learning comes from both the development and use of the system, where possible. Key steps in the process were to start with a simple implementation of a subset of the software requirements and iteratively enhance the evolving sequence of versions until the full system is implemented. At each iteration, design modifications are made and new functional capabilities are added." |

#5: Parkkker, as usual you miss the point. The article talked about MS going from a few public betas to the open source model where frequent betas are publicly released and mass feedback sought. The programming model is not what they were talking about, but pease blather on about iterative programming and other things you pretend to know about.

| #7: I made no such claim. I really, REALLY wish you would start reading the actual words posted instead of just making up your own reality as you go along. For the second time now, what the article is talking about is more frequent beta releases, not any particular internal programming model. Why is that so hard for you to grasp? |
