Win XP Update Crashes Some PCs
Time: 04:57 EST/09:57 GMT | News Source: PC World | Posted By: Alex Harris

Some Windows XP users are having trouble installing the operating system's first service pack, bulging with bug fixes and updated drivers--and are judging the cure worse than the disease. Although SP1 plugs a major hole in the OS, the fix has been painful for a tiny but vocal few of the estimated 1 million users who have downloaded the update, which Microsoft posted on September 9. For the vast majority, the download and installation has gone well, according to a Microsoft spokesperson, who calls the process "smoother than a lot of previous releases."

But Internet support forums and e-mail to PC World from disgruntled users show that many people continue to have serious problems with the update. The chief complaint: PCs that run like molasses after installing SP1. Running a close second are reports that PCs refuse to restart after installation or become highly unstable. Some systems continuously reboot. Other users complain that applications won't start or now crash repeatedly, including Microsoft's own programs. "My 1.9-GHz Dell 8200 computer runs slower than my 800-Mhz laptop. Outlook won't start, and all programs either take forever to start, or just won't start," says Christopher O'Connor, a doctor in Chicago.

If you are having SP1 issues then post about it in our forums.

Recently I set a completely clean copy of Windows XP on a computer that has an AMD k62 500 MHz with 196 MB, has a GF2 MX400 and SBLive 1024. The original install went fine and the system worked perfectly. Then I decided to install Service Pack 1. <B>Big Mistake</B>, once installed, the system restarted and never came back. Everytime I started to boot in to Windows XP, the system would begin to load, produced a very breif BOSD (only displayed itself for a fraction of a second) and reset.

However, I tried the service pack on my Athlon 1333 with 512 MB, GF2 GTS and SBLive 5.1, which has Windows XP and some other software installed, and thing worked fined. This system boot ok, seems a little faster and didn't have the refresh problem it has pre SP which would make the PC hang.

So maybe the problem expreience (XP) with some users is to do with older hardware. Has anyone else out there noticed this?

I notice with OS X from apple, it appears they don't actually release service packs, but just rebox it with a new disk. This disk contains all the new update combine in to the original code. I dunno if that actually do some sort of Mac OS Update, but I have notice a new OS X box appear at my local computer store every 2 months saying like, 10.1, 10.1.5, 10.2.

Also it the same case with linux too. Each distrubution doesn't seem to release service packs, but instead, every 4-6 months, just release a new version (8.0, 8.1, 8.2 etc) with an upgrade edition where you have to pay an additional $49.95 to get all the updates slipstreamed.

#6-we suffer because we're laughing too hard at the windows users. It's hurting our sides.

When you next set up your computer, try setting up your partitions like this. Here is an example of a 20 GB Hard Drive set up:

Primary Boot Partition = 1024 MB formatted either as Fat16/ Fat32
OS Partition 1 = 7000 MB for Windows 9x/ME if you have a copy
OS Partition 2 = 7000 MB for Windows 2000/XP if you have a copy
Storage Partition = 5000 MB for storing files, software, video music etc

If you only want one OS, just have one OS Partition. With this set up, you always have enough space and if you have to format the Primary Boot or OS Partition, the stuff on your Storage Partition will still be safe. Hope this helps.

#2 You are right calling MS ones service packs and Apple ones "updates". Apple users have to pay to get OS updates that mostly add basic functions to the OS. Also keep in mind that XP SP1 works in thousands of different hardware scenarios something Apple never had to deal with. I couldn't swear on this but I believe that the next hardware from Apple will not support OS 9 releases.

On my four XP installs I did three. Two Pro ones did just fine and had no issues. My wifes Dell Inspiron 8100 with Homo, BSODed and then I could not repair without a re-install over top of the Homo version so I put pro on it and then all was fine. For some reason the Homo version died and I think Bootvis was the cause. I tried to re-bootvis it and that is when it died. Figures MS's own program may have killed it. Anyhow the PC runs a lot smoother with Pro then it did with Home. Wireless Acces is much faster as far as loading at bootup, and works better with WEP. The last one I have not started the laptop in a while so it has not been done yet, but that is a Pro install so it should do alright, plus the Dell was the only factory install as I did not know the laptop came with an actual installation CD, thought it was a restore disk....

Are these reported problems only when a clean install of XP + SP1 is not done?
Often doing a reinstall of the OS will be the cure.

Jagged, don't you think it is funny that the only way Apple seems to be able to get folks to adopt OS X is to build machines that refuse to boot previous versions. Microsoft knows that its operating systems improve with each release. It doesn't have to coerce its customers the way Apple does. Microsoft also doesn't have to release service packs as often. I hear the great Jaguire already has a service release. Lol!

#9 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 9/23/2002 10:32:04 AM
Interesting. We've begun deploying SP1 with our XP builds here. Haven't seen one lockup yet, and in every case the machine's speed and responsiveness has been boosted tremendously. I ordered ZDNet's Winstone 2002 CD to try to benchmark that diff.

nomdlev - Hey, you know on the bright side at least Microsoft gives service packs to users for free. With Apple they charge you $130, whether or not you bought the computer last week or the year before.

#10 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 10:38:19 AM
If you knew me at all, you'd know that I'll never have a love for a software product that still goes by its codename. If Windows 2000 had kept the code name "Cairo" (and yes I know it isn't all "Cairo", but a lot of it was), I wouldn't have used it either.

All of the customers that are refusing to use OS X actually care what OS X does? I find that rather hard to believe. Want to provide me some evidence there?

#11 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 10:40:39 AM
You see, soda, when Apple didn't give the high performing OS it promised, it made its users pay for two "upgrades" rather than provide the fixes free of cost. This is very much unlike Microsoft which offers "updates" at no cost which improve system performance even though base performance was already quite good.

#12 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 10:52:16 AM
So "Jaguar" isn't the code name? They decided to throw away a perfectly good name that actually described the product - OS X - and instead use something rediculous having nothing to do with software like "Jaguar". I sure hope you're joking.

#13 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 9/23/2002 11:09:31 AM
nomdlev - Naw, OSX 10.2 is the same as SP1 for XP.

#14 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 12:20:43 PM
That's what fools don't understand. Codenames are NOT the same as product names.

#15 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 9/23/2002 1:45:08 PM
nomdlev - I have no experience with Win98, much less Win98se. I do remember seeing SE for sale at Best Buy for $40. So by your own reasoning, Apple is still over-charging by 3 times.

#16 By 4209 (64.175.184.131) at 9/23/2002 4:01:56 PM
Too bad that all the people I know that use Mac's, whom are graphics artists, all use OS9 instead of OS X. We have 5 Macs here at work that have OS 9 on them and the Mac users personal machines run OS 9. Crap even one of them bought a PC so he could game, and now has a PC and a Mac on his desk here. He only has the Mac because it was new and we could not justify tossing it yet.

Well,
Win98 was better in some regards that win95 but with the new explorer shell it was slower.

Win98se has to be the most stable of all the 9x builds, and it is about 1000 times less stable than win 2k was at release, yet alot sp1 that fixed most of the bugs to make it even more stable.

Lets see from the MS days. I bought dos 1.01 (wasn't given an option it came with the computer;) had dos 2.0 3.x( several different versions but that was in the days you would get several different updates) dos 4.x, dos 5.x and dos 6.0 - 6.22 :)
I didn't get windows 1.0, I had windows 2 but didn't play with it much. windows 3.0 was ok, but windows really didn't take off until 3.1

It should also be mentioned that windows 1.0 was out before the macs were released:)
1983 to be exact. about the same time that Apple introduced the Lisa which failed miserably.

While the UI was DOSish in look and feel. it still was a Windows;)

El:)
