CDRlabs.com has posted a review of Plextor's dual format DVD recorder,
the PX-708A, which supports 8x writing of DVD+R media. Here's a brief snippet from the review:
This summer, Plextor announced their second generation DVD writer, the PX-708A. Banking on the success of dual format DVD writers like the Sony DRU-510A, the PX-708A can write to both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media. Plextor's new drive also takes DVD writing speeds to the next level. It writes to DVD-R and DVD+RW media at 4x and is the first DVD writer to offer 8x DVD+R writing speeds. This by itself is impressive. However, the PX-708A also boasts 40x CD reading and writing speeds along with features like Plextor's own PoweRec and VariRec technologies.
Plextor has shown us once again why they're considered to be one of the top names in the optical storage business. While the PX-708A does have a few growing pains that need to be worked out, they are few and far between. Even in its current state, the PX-708A is still one of the best DVD writers on the market today.
Are 8x DVD writing speeds as impressive as they sound? I'd be lying if I said they weren't. The PX-708A blew away the DVD writers from the competition, spitting out entire DVD's in less than 8 minutes. With 8x DVD+R media being in short supply, Plextor has also given their new drive the ability to write to select 4x DVD+R media at 8x. While sound in concept, we found that this didn't always work. As others have reported, it had a tendency to drop the writing speed down to 4x with some media. Thanks to its 4x writing speeds, the PX-708A also turned in some very good times with DVD+RW media. However, it lagged behind some of the other drives when writing to DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.
