64bit Windows Launches April | |

We’ve been hearing chip giants AMD and Intel waffle on about 64bit computing all week (in fact, they seem to have got bored and started banging on about dual core processors instead) and now we know when we can put all this processory goodness to effect: April. Yes, 64bit Windows, now officially dubbed "Windows XP 64" (inspired!), will come to a PC near us in next month. Finally. Thank God. About Time. They say anger follows emotional release, so here it is: AMD has been shipping 64bit Athlon processors since 2003! | ||

| I just recently upgraded my box. I considered Athlon64, but I realized that I would be paying a premium for something that I couldn't really take advantage of yet. I got burned the same way when I bought a DVD burner. I spent extra (~$180 CDN) to get a dual-layer burner less than a year ago, only to find out that you can't find the damn dual-layer media anywhere. Now you can buy the same drive for half the price, and I've never burned a dual-layer disc. My NEXT system will be dual-core x64, but that's likely 2-3 years away. Hopefully the x64 software market will have caught on, but I suspect that this the start of a whole cycle of buying pushes from the major vendors. For the average user, replacing all their hardware and software just to move to 64-bit will get them almost nothing other than a large loss in their bank account. All the major vendors are going to hype & push x64 like it's something revolutionary, instead of evolutionary. |

Mmmm, delicious 64-bit popup/overlay flash madness, with extra gypsy cream and admiral's pie...
I updated my box to an AMD 3000 just a few weeks ago (it was cheap). The latest 64-bit XP RC runs just fine on it (beta drivers were fine, but could not find a good driver for SATA in IDE mode). I'm looking forward to the final release... |

#3: I'm glad that you got what you wanted for a good price. However, where I am it was a premium to get an Athlon64 vs Intel 3.2 GHz P4. When I was doing my research, I read several reports where the Athlon64 didn't give noticable gains for the stuff I was interested in, so it made no sense to pay more to get less. Most of my home PC use is light, limted to:
web Usenet binaries Windows Installer development UT2004 I think there's a 64-bit build of UT2004, but for most of what I do, I'd gain nothing or virtually nothing. I'm sure I'll move to x64 in a year or two, depending on how big that tax refund is. |

Avast! Antivirus ( http://www.avast.com ) also works on XP x64 and has a version that is free for home use. There is no specifically marked x64 version, just one package supporting both x86 and x64 (the user-mode portion runs via WOW 64).
It should be no surprise that most 32-bit security solutions (AV/Firewall/etc.) won't work as-is on x64 as they tend to use kernel-level drivers/file system filters. Most spyware solutions don't use kernel-specific components which is why they are not affected. Most "normal" (i.e. user-mode-only software) should work as-is. Anything that has kernel-dependent components will need to be upgraded to an x64-supporting counterpart. This is no different from past upgrades of kernel-dependent components that were necessary due to the move from 16 to 32-bit Windows or (in some cases) kernel differences/changes from 9x to NT or NT to NT.
