Choosing and Using MSDE 2000 as the Database Engine for Your Application | |

Until recently, Microsoft offered two means of database management: Microsoft Jet (the Microsoft Access database engine that is shipped with both Microsoft Access and Microsoft Visual Studio) and Microsoft SQL Server. With the release of the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE), a SQL Server-compatible database engine, there is an exciting new option for creating desktop and shared database solutions. MSDE enables developers to build desktop and shared database solutions that easily migrate to SQL Server when the solution must scale. This article discusses the features and benefits of MSDE 2000 and provides links to useful information, including online documentation, Microsoft Knowledge Base articles, and Microsoft white papers, to enable you to build robust MSDE 2000 solutions. | ||

They really should bundle a stripped down version of SQL Enterprise Manager with this, so that you can manage it.
Unfortunately MSDE installs with a blank sa password by default, and most people don't know how to change this because the only admin options you have are basically registry edits and command line stuff. |

| The only advantage mySQL and PostgreSQL have on MSDE is that they are cross platform. The GUI tools would make little difference. |

To legally redistribute MSDE, you pretty much have to have a set of GUI tools. IIRC you can redestirute MSDE if you have a license to SQL Server 2000 Developer, Standard, or Enterprise. Further you can redestribute with certain VisualStudio .NET versions or Office XP Developer. Any of those products have the GUI tools a developer needs to manage an MSDE install.
I can't imagine a senario when a developer would be using MSDE when he didn't plan to distribute it. If he is going to distribute it, he'd already have a product that has GUI tools. As for MSDE installations on client machines, clients have no need to affect a db - that is the developers' job. |

| Lol, oh. I misunerstood. I thought you were saying clients needed GUI tools. I always use Enterprise Manager or Query Analyzer, since I have SQL Server Developer, so I never give too much thought to what tools are available when MSDE is bundled with other products. I am surprised Microsoft isn't providing better support for its FoxPro developers. |
