Logging on locally using Vista | |

One of the things that has appeared with Vista in a domain is that the selection box that you would normally use to be able to log onto the machine locally is no longer appearing on the login screen. So .. how do I log onto a Vista box that is joined onto the domain using a local acount? If I wanted to logon with a local user account called Kyle I would type into the account name box: .\kyle - this then logs on using a local account rather than a domain account. | ||

Is there a way to deal with this in XP ?
I constantly get calls for users trying to log into domain machines using local accounts and getting the "Domain Controller" error because the "From" specification in the Advanced/Windows tab (novell client) is set wrong. It doesn't seem to remember settings when you fix it either. Also seeing computers getting detached from the Domain when a bad NIC card is replaced (I would assume due to the MAC Address Change) and this is a ROYAL pain in the ass when the user is remote. TL |

This will explain how to leverage the resource kit to manage user rights. For a one of - very quick fix, go to the local machine, and into computer management - expand users and groups, click on the desired group you wish to add the users to, click on "Add to group" browse your directory, or search for the user and simply add them to the group. Use the resrouce kit and the information as above to learn how to manage local machine security policies in the context of users and user rights/permissions assignment. It is very easy and you can use the GPOM to apply existing, custom, or customized policies to users, groups, etc... Your devs can do this programmatically and embed the use of policies into their applications within your company - if they are not.... train them, or find new devs. It can save you tons of hours of work and your company a lot of money and users a lot of headache. |
