Registry Editing Tips

Locate Help File For You Programs

Some times, an application can't seem to find it's help file. This is probably because you have moved the program off from its original position. Since most application writes the path of its help file into the registry, they won't just update it when you move a program even though you have place the help file into the same directory with the program itself.

To let Windows know the new location of the help file, run your registry editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Help (Windows 9x) or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Help (Windows NT). The location of most programs' help files should be listed here. If you seldom use a help file, you can delete them off your hard drive and point to the CD so that you can access them sometime later.
