Microsoft and Arcot Introduce .NET Service For Consumer Payment Authentication | |

Microsoft Corp. and Arcot Systems Inc. today announced an alliance to integrate the Microsoft® .NET Passport with the Arcot TransFort (TM) payment authentication platform. Card-issuing banks that support online authentication, such as the Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure Payment Application (SPA) programs for Internet purchases, can enable cardholders to seamlessly link their personal .NET Passport account with the secure, online card authentication of TransFort. Cardholders can log on, shop and authenticate online purchases using a simple and familiar Passport sign-in and interface. | ||

If I read this right, before long it won't be optional to have a PassPort account. It will be required to get anywhere with a Credit Card!

Retailers wouldn't do that, they'd be stupid.
It'd be like only allowing one method of payment (or just one credit card). There will always be a large contingent of people who refuse to use Passport. If the Credt card companies mandate it, they will suffer a backlash and either have to offer multiple technologies or something other than passport. |

None of this has to do with MasterCard/VISA; this is a business decision by one authorized authenticator. MC and VISA have their own authentication methods... each of the purveyors of MC and Visa credit cards have their own further authentication systems... Arcot provides an authentication service for these banks and lendors--there are four other approved MC/Visa authenticators--although Arcot is the largest. Arcot has stated that they are pursuing other methods of authentication.
This is not a big deal unless your particular credit card is using Arcot and buys into the Passport authentication system exclusively... but this is unlikely because there are always plenty of options when it comes to credit card providers... Not a good idea to put anyone off when there are so many options... This is a small deal... Also, this doesn't mean eCommerce sites will sport Passport authentication so that you can access your credit card authentication... so it's difficult to see if there is any impact at all. At eCommerce sites, they will still sport their own methods of authenticating your credit card info... We'll see, but this is not a big deal at all.
