Microsoft is planning to cut the price of its Surface RT tablets. Sources familiar with Microsoft's Surface plans have revealed to The Verge that the price cut could occur as early as next week, with each model being cut by $150. Microsoft's move to cut prices on its Surface RT tablets follow slow sales, and efforts to sell the devices elsewhere at lower rates. The software maker recently launched an education program to sell the Surface RT to schools at $199, and it has been clearing stock of its devices at its Tech-Ed and Worldwide Partner conferences recently. | ||

$349 for an RT tablet without a keyboard is still too expensive to attractive hoards of buyers. Include the touch keyboard and the price becomes more attractive. As is, it still will cost too much for most people that can now buy a fully functional Android tablet for $200 or less.
People already using Android, or iOS, aren't going to buy a Surface RT just to use Windows or Office RT. They will keep using what they have as long as it works painlessly for them. Windows (any version) is not perceived as painless by most people, who don't want to relive past Windows problems on a tablet. Out of hundreds of active customers our business has, only 2 asked about Surface units and only 1 has a Windows phone. The rest use iOS or Android devices. This tells me Windows mobile devices in general are in trouble with consumers, and MS doesn't realize that 8.1 isn't going to change that, or maybe they just don't care enough at this time to seriously go after the mobile market with very aggressive pricing like they did with early Windows versions which killed off OS/2 and almost buried the Mac. Things are happening the other way around this time with mobile Windows being the equivalent of desktop Mac. |
