#1 bobsireno, I just now tried it myself and observed the same "phone home" behavior, but it doesn't appear to be the codec itself dropping the dime. Installation of the codec includes a Google update checker, which can be disabled via Services in the the Computer Management console AND the Windows Scheduler (disable both). There's also an entry for it in IE9's add-on list, but that doesn't seem to have an effect that I can see. Anyway, if you let it make the connection, it only reconnects hourly after that (according to the Scheduler configuration), or at user logon. The high frequency that you observed was probably caused when you refused the connection, and the updater is a persistent little bugger on failure.
