In launching the iPad yesterday, Steve Jobs criticized netbooks, calling them little more than "cheap laptops" and adding, "The problem is that netbooks aren't better than anything." But when it comes to overall sales, they'll clearly be better than at least one thing --- the iPad. Netbook sales will continue to soar, dwarfing sales of the iPad.

I thought the same was being said for the iPhone. Even when it was $600, they couldn't keep them in stock.

Right now, I have to agree.
A good Netbook provides twice the capability at half the price.
Apple has some work to do. An over-grown iTouch is not what we wanted. At least not me.
If the thing was OSX based, had expandable memory, and a damned USB port I think they would be in business.
I also see the non-replaceable battery as a HUGE problem.

#2 - I'd expect the battery issue will be a mute point for most people just like it has ended up being for iPhone/iPod users. Only a tiny minority moaned.
As for OS X - I'm sure an OS X version will come out sometime for more fanatical users - but right now the aim of the iPad seems to be at the general user who just simply wants, internet, email, photo and seemingly ebook access (unless you are in the UK which won't have iBook!!!) my mum loves the look of it for lounging around on the net and reading. So I guess thats the market they will aim for...it's more a wait and see from me.
I personally like the idea of it, as I only use my mac for browsing the net, email, apps, photos and vids and for no reason other than enjoying the interface more than windows and the design of the hardware more than any other PC manufacturer and I don't mind paying more for what I class as a better experience.
I'm not getting one right away though, i'll wait and see what it is like in store and when others get it.
Also like #3 I would probably avoid any MS based tablet simply because I don't find they have any know how about how to make a decent one for users - where as Android based tablets have been looking great.

#1 I love how people keep comparing this to the iphone's success and arrival. The difference is nothing even remotely covered the feature list of an iphone when it arrived.
In this situation there is already a healthy showing with a featurelist that far exceeds the ipad. Not only that but expectations are tons different in full size devices. People are happy with bread crumbs that show up on phones. They don't expect much from it and that's why the iPhone was so revered... it provided tons more features. Now they are showing up with far fewer.
Oh and, keep in mind. The price point you reference was subisidized by ppl living off of their credit cards. Today is competely different. Just ask google about their horrible Nexus 1 sales.
Now, if this had been OSX. They would have at least brought something to the party worth talking about. If that device had been released by anybody else it would have been laughed off stage imo.

I think when the initial surge is over, it's going to fall flat on it's face. I hate to say it, but I really do think that's going to happen.
The only one that stands a chance is the $499 model.

If it was OS X based? I thought that's the idea Apple has been trying to sell us on all along--that the iPhone is OS X-based?
Admirable attempt, Apple, but way to shoot yourself in the foot by doing things like not including an SD card. Seriously, what would that cost? And would it really affect the appearance and form factor? Of course not. Maybe plenty of people don't care, when you see something so blatantly anti-consumer like that, it just reinforces everything I don't like about the company.

If Microsoft released it, it would be the holy grail of tablet PCs, and they would want one right now :)
