Security Essentials tests better than Symantec, McAfee | |

Microsoft's new anti-virus software, Microsoft Security Essentials, runs faster than the leading Symantec and McAfee applications, according to a report (PDF) by AV-Comparatives. Though MSE 1.0 was rated "very fast" in every test category – from unarchiving to launching programs – it placed sixth among 16 anti-virus products. Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2010 trailed MSE by two spots and McAfee VirusScan Plus 2010 came in 10th place. Only one other product – F-Secure Anti-Virus 2010 – was rated "very fast" in every category. | ||

| Avira still is at the top for anti-virus programs. Put in their anti-spyware program and the suite loses steam. I find Avira Anti-Vir with Webroot Spy Sweeper is a very effective combo, if imperfect. Any one have experience that offers a better combination that you have tested and know works well? |

| I love MSE. It runs faster than anything else I've tried, and I think I've tried 'em all, and since I never seem to get mal/spyware anymore on Vista/Win7 it does the trick. I wouldn't necessarily trust it with employees who seem to get up to, well, trouble but for home stuff it's great. |

| Great AV program; the only thing I miss is some more options for scheduling although for the majority of users it is better the way it is. |

1) Free software, no nags, no subscriptions
2) Low resource usage 3) Based on both the forefront technologies and user reported data to catch new threats faster and faster as more people use it. 4) Better than average performan in realtime mode 5) Superior repair - MSE has more data of what any malicious software has changed in the OS, so when other security software just removes the threat or fixes a few files, MSE goes thorugh a whole cycle of repairing malicious registry entries and any data modified outside of just the infection points. This is important, and as more people use it, becomes more robust. (Think back to the AntiVirus 2007 spyware from a couple of years ago, it was only the Microsoft Malicious software tools that not only fully removed it, but also fixed the registry and extra data files modified. MSE builds on this level of repair, and can use data collected by people that opt-in to the community to find every change made to look for and correct.) On Vista or Win7, I recommend turning off Real-Time and only scanning files that you download and suspect and then use the scheduled daily scans to ensure your system is safe. The OS is already doing a good job at protecting you, and you know when you torrent or download something that is suspect and even if not, the daily scans will catch things. #6 You can fully customize the scheduling of MSE, it uses Windows Task Scheduler, and you can literally create an infinate combination and method of scheduling scans via Task Scheduler. For example, have it fire when system is idle for 2hours but stop if computer is no longer idle. Since it uses the OS's task scheduling system, the options are virtually endless, check out the Task Scheduler and you can find the MSE entries that are already there and modify or create your own. I still think, for paid softeware. NOD32 can't be best.
