Kudos to Microsoft for Dual-Core Chip Plans | |

It's a clear win for customers that Microsoft has decided to maintain the status quo with its per-processor software licensing model after dual-core and multicore processor hardware becomes available in coming months. Microsoft announced on Tuesday that the company won't consider dual-core, four-core, eight-core or whatever-core as individual processors, but rather that such technology will be treated, from a licensing perspective, as one processor, no matter how many cores you carve into a chip. That's relevant to SQL Server, as well as to BizTalk Server and other Windows Server System products. Licensing experts and at least one SQL Server customer were gloating at the news, given that it's going to be much cheaper to run SQL Server on souped-up servers than it will be to run Oracle or IBM databases. | ||

OK, so let's say that Intel comes out with a dual-core Pentium 5 and each core has hyperthreading. According to the statement by Microsoft, they will support up to 4 CPUs with Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. Here is where it falls apart: Windows 2003 Server Standard edition can only support 4 CPUs. This new single CPU will look like 4 CPUs to the operating system. A dual CPU machine (with these hypothetical CPUs) would register 8 CPUs to the operating system and would not be compatible with Windows 2003 Server Standard edition.
Does anyone know how Microsoft is going to get over this physical limitation? I see this physical limitation being inconsistent with their statement of how they will count CPUs. |

| I have a different take on this! with "dual-core" emerging from a nascent market Microsft was forced to make that decision. I can't imagine the average user paying twice for Windows on the same box. It is their product and they can do what they want but from a practical stand point their hands were tied. With Linux et all ever crying for attention that this would have blown out of proportions on the negative side of Microsoft |

| #5, the Microsoft operating system DOES count a hyperthreaded CPU as two CPUs, so two dual core hyperthreaded CPUs will be counted as 4 CPUs in a single socket. A dual dual-core Xeon will show up as 8 CPUs, which is more than Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition can support. |

#4, yes, of course for SQL. But the comment was about an "average user" paying twice for Windows, which is not accurate.
Parkker, I think the question is not about counting against the license limit, but whether or not a dual-proc, dual-core, HT system (8 logical processors total) would be fully utilized by Windows Server Standard, which supports up to 4 processors. That's a fair question. |

| #9, Parkker answered you, correctly - W2K3 "does and is able" to distinguish between phyiscal and logical processors. This will allow W2K3 to see two dual core and hyperthreading capable physical CPU's as two physical CPU's with a combined total of 8 logical processing cores. The W2K3 HAL supports this and MS will not charge incremental fees for its OS, or most of its servers when running on multi-core hardware. Provided the OS was installed with SMP recognized [e.g., with either two CPU's or one CPU with HT], one could upgrade to a multi-core CPU without re-hashing the HAL <which is easy enough a process in the first place>. |

| #10, 11: those are good suppositions, but do we know for sure if they will support 8 logical processors with Standard Edition, or are they going to require Enterprise? Actually, you could have a machine with 4 CPUs and 16 logical processors--would we see Standard Edition support it? Does anyone know for sure, or is it just guessing at this point? |
