Although Microsoft leaders have spent years promoting tablet computers with only marginal success, excitement around the form factor is finally building, thanks to technology advancements, a Microsoft executive said.

yep, Apple will make a tablet that is fun to use for what it is.
as good as multi-touch is in Windows 7, MS will try to be everything else and miss that and Apple's product will succeed. That's one possibility with a history of similar outcomes that suggests it will happen just that way. The problem is the same one I have - I assume people are really smart and or want to be really smart. They do not. Not at least all the time. Apple on the other hand seems to assume the reverse - that they are smart and people are all dumb, or want being dumb to be ok at least some of the time. Apple is right. Much of what people do on a phone, or computer, or a tablet should not require that people be smart. nor should they. Which I why I've retained some really great UX and interface designers to help us make what is complex appear easy, or at least focused in ways that in the past we have not been as good at. Same drilll with the hardware - take the challenges away and make transparent what is complex. 7 goes a long way toward doing that. We'll see how it plays out over time. |

MS launched the first Tablet mainly because Bill Gates was sold on the idea; without him I am not sure I would be using one now.
I always loved the idea and right now I am at the third one, a Toshiba M400. Said that I also admit that the first one I bought was... horrible: Poor handwriting recognition Underpowered Over priced Short battery life a Windows desktop UI "adapted" to be used for the Tablet Worst of all no outside readable screen Couple of years later Handwriting recognition has improved a lot (W7). I am in the market to buy a new one but I still feel they are undepowered and overpriced. As for outdoor readable screens it seems that either way you have it or "Touch" capabilities but I am still checking into it. The GUI interface shown in the "Courier" could be a big boost but we will have to see if and when it will be available. I watched so many MS brilliant concepts disappear in oblivion because of fear to make radical changes. Bottom line: I am buying another Tablet shortly but I do not expect to be able to buy my perfect "Tablet" for at least another 2/3 years.
