Microsoft: Don't just throw money at health care | |

In stark contrast to the many businesses beating a path to Washington to beg for money, Microsoft is urging caution as the government looks to spend billions on digitizing health care.
Peter Neupert, the former Drugstore.com CEO, who now heads Microsoft's health care unit, said investment is a "necessary, but not sufficient" condition for improvement and said that spending money on computer technology may not even be the right first step.
"I'm trying to transform the discussion just a little bit," he said in an interview on Wednesday. "Don't focus on spending money on tech per se. Focus on what outcomes do we want."

| It is difficult to be optimistic about govenment choices when they have look the other way as the US manufacturing and transportation infrastructures erode, choose to ignore advice about impending financial system problems, borrows trillions of dollars from past enemies to fight wars against current enemies and also to band-aid the financial system. Howver, if they, elected officials and minions both, listen to this one guy, they may be able to effectively focus on the desired outcome of a computerized health care records system before establishing a process (or another bridge to nowhere), and save us all a tremendous amount of frustration and money later on with a functional and effective health care system in place. Say a prayer that logic and reason prevail and not action for the sake of action alone. |

Another well written article from the CNET "journalists" - the tech info company that refuses to publish anything anyone wants to read. It only took until the third and fourth to last paragraphs to get to the point!
The crux of the matter is that our governments (local, state and federal) are gargantuan players in the health care industry - they are over 50% of the industry. Don't believe me? Take a look at the federal budget. The entitlement part of the federal budget is now 52% of that total budget and it's that part of the budget that is on "auto pilot." In other words, it grows year in and year out regardless of what legislators or the economy is doing. Why isn't a doctor able to bill a patient for an e-mail or a home monitoring system? Because government isn't trying to facilitate new ideas in medicine. They are trying to squeeze private enterprise out of the industry all together. And electronic patient records are more likely to be used against the patient then for them in the new totally run government health care environment that the likes of uber liberal Boxer envisions and is doing everything in her power to foster. "Did you eat candy today, Mr. Citizen? Minus 10 health care points for you today. That will go against you when you need that transplant or by-pass - unless you are too old to get one anyway (Note - I didn't say not in good enough health - it happens every day in England's health care system). Have a nice day!" |
