Actually, I'm looking forward to the day when games and the desktop aren't so seperated. I still want to see my communications (IM, email, etc.) while I'm playing my full screen game.
Evidently, so do lots of other people. There are several DirectX-based IM clients that were created to make it easier to use IM while in games like Counter-Strike.
One awesome feature of MSN Messenger (one that Trillian still hasn't been able to duplicate fully) was the notification dialog that would show up in games as well as on your desktop. I could see when people IM'd me while I was playing Quake, or whatever. It was great, non-intrusive, and easy to turn off if I wanted.
Eventually, I see games integrating more and more with the desktop instead of isolating themselves.
