Follwing today’s announcement that VMware CEO Diane Greene has resigned and the company has lowered its revenue forecast, Clabby Analytics analyst Joe Clabby is 100% convinced that Microsoft’s Hyper-V will take over VMware in market share over the next three to five years. The analyst makes some strong points for this takeover in his recent report, Six Reasons Why Microsoft’s Hyper-V will Overtake VMware to Become the Major Player in the x86 Server Virtualization Marketplace. VMware had the vision to see the value of virtualization and took the technology to the top unchallenged due to strategy, innovation and sales execution, but that ride is about to come to an end, Clabby said. | ||

While all that the author said is true, the same was said of Oracle vs. SQL Server. So far, Oracle has maintained its leadership despite it being the far more expensive product and having a much steeper learning curve to master.
Presently, it is VMMotion (the ability to move live workloads from storage device to storage device) that is the superior feature of VMWare. If Microsoft can add this feature to their offering, it may just tip the balance. Nevertheless, the installed base of VMWare isn't going away anytime soon. We are talking years for a conversion of that base. |

#1 There is a difference. SQL Server doesn't run on Unix. And it still gets 3.5 billion in sales.
Hyper-V will run on any box that can run ESX. And it will run on way more boxes than ESX supports. And Hyper-V performs really well. I agree VMotion is the killer app for ESX. |

| Hyper-V won't run my core system application suite relaibly(the middleware servers specifically). VMware will. Kinda funny considering that the application suite is written around .Net framework 2. Maybe we're cursed because we use Oracle DBs for the core system, and only use SQL server for low transaction rate ancillary applications ;-> |
