Weeks after the successful launch of its Firefox browser, Mozilla released an e-mail application in another salvo on Microsoft's home turf. The Mozilla Foundation, an open-source development group founded by Netscape and spun off last year by Netscape's parent company Time Warner, on Wednesday published a release candidate of its Thunderbird 1.0 e-mail management software. | ||

does anyone out there use thunderbird and how does it compare to outlook?
i use firefox and like it a lot but have never seen the need to get any email program other than outlook. |

T-Bird is actually pretty nice. If you liked the old Netscape Mail, you'll love this one.
I do have a few issues with it, though none of them are show-stoppers: 1. I think the preferences and settings are a bit scattered. To properly set up LDAP access, you have to visit no less than 3 or 4 dialogs, and they are scattered between Options and Account Settings. Setting up LDAP the first time can be confusing. 2. I'm not real fond of how the news reader handles threading. It's not efficient, and what shows as grouped threads in Outlook Express shows as a real mess in T-Bird sometimes. 3. Click-Dragging to select a large area of text in the message window stops at the bottom of the window. The window will not scroll when you reach the bottom. The only way around this is to click the start point, scroll to the end of the selection, and then shift-click. It's still nice though. TL |

| oldog, it doesn't compare at all to Outlook, however it does surpass Outlook Express. It also includes junk mail filtering, which is pretty awesome in my experience. |
