REDMOND, Wash.--Since taking over the Windows development reins from Jim Allchin, Steven Sinofsky has chosen to fall almost completely off the public radar. It's not that he hasn't been busy getting Vista Service Pack 1 out the door and starting work on Windows 7. It's just that Sinofsky doesn't want to talk about products until they are well along in their development. Last year, Sinofsky penned a blog to his Windows unit co-workers, explaining his public silence and urging them to follow his lead. | ||

| 64-bit should be the primary focus of Windows development, as it was in server development. 64-bit seems to be played down, with little attention being paid to mainstream users who will prefer 64-bit capability to address very large amounts of RAM, although mention of driver availablility was good. |

Reading the text of the interview was almost worse than listening to a hearing in Capitol Hill; totally useless and a waste of time.
Besides, as #1 correctly pointed out, referring to 64 bit as something for "enthusiasts" let me puzzled, not to say concerned; even worse, we are speaking of 2010 time frame. I am seriously considering dumping MS stocks and buy something related to coal processing and railways. |

| I would suspect that there is still quite a demand for 32-bit by areas not as prosperous as North America and Europe. Not everyone has the latest 64-bit quad-core 4 GB system. MS doesn't just want the cream, they want it all and that means supporting 32-bit for the next couple of years. |

Gonna have to go with Latch on this one.
There's more to it though imo. Its funny to me how many in the industry still believe we're in a 1 year to 2 lifecycle of worker computers. Its the same reason why many haven't migrated to Vista. There is no real driving force anymore that makes most businesses want to replace their computers. I personally still have tons of Dual Core processors running around with 1gb of Ram. Sure they are not nearly as powerful as machines I can buy today but quite frankly I'd say 75-80% of business computer users use their computers to run Word Processors, EMail, and on occasion a Spread Sheet program. Those 3 items right there need next to no power to work effectively. The only real software I see an average business user running that needs any horsepower is the accounting/erp software. Depending on how poorly its written you need a touch more Ram and processor speeds but that usually doesn't have a big enough effect to be worth replacing 1-2 year old machines. Hell I'm writing this on a P4 with 3gb of ram and it works just fine. I'm actually about to upgrade to something new to speed up VS.net but other than that I can browse the internet, respond to e-mails, work on spreadsheets and presentations with ease. Servers at this point are the only market I see where 64bit and insane spec's are still worth it. Especially with Virtual Servers having 8 systems running on one piece of metal is just fantastic. But workstations, unless you have a specific job function requiring tons of processing and video horsepower, you can buy them from wal-mart and be just as productive these days. |

64 bit for me is just related to RAM; I had 4GB (4x1GB) of RAM on my Dell XPS 720 till last week when two of them got burned. While I am waiting for replacement I can painfully feel the difference.
I usually have Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Small Business accounting always running on Vista 64 and no virtual disks, compilers etc. |

For those who really want to avoid the marketing speak,
1. Confirmed a major release. 2. Confirmed it's actively being worked on unlike Vista where their direction was sort of lost till the reset. 3. Confirmed it'll RTM in H1 2010. |

One cannot look at Windows Vista x64 through the same dated lens as one would IA64.
WoW - Windows on Windows obviates 99% of the challenges in any a move to 64 bit. Many MS programs, O2K7 being only one example, are 32 bit based apps - they run perfectly on x64. Games actually run better on x64 - in fact, the whole system does. Yes, there are valid economic reasons why Windows 7 will also be available in 32 bit versions. That said, any user able to move to x64 should and they will benefit for having done so. The x64 reality of today is many times more evolved than it was a year ago. |
