#3: I do believe Gates has an "I must win" compulsion, but it's constrained by reality. They've been fighting with Oracle and IBM for what seems like ages in the DB space (Ellison's quote, paraphrased, is priceless: "It's not enough that I win, everyone else must lose"). They tried to compete with Quicken but couldn't take the #1 spot, so tried to buy them. US Gov't said 'Nope", so MS is the perpetual also-ran in personal finance. What they do have going for them is patience and almost endless cash to prop up money-losers for as long as it takes. All they have to do with Intuit, for example, is to copy them, have a better coat of paint on the product, undercut Intuit's pricing model heavily, and wait for Intuit to do something stupid (XG? Product activation?). As I've read, MS has made a lot of money just by waiting for their competition to implode. And yes, there are quite a few others. Particularly in space where they can't hammer their way in via the Windows desktop.
