Gritty Nits - Fix Internet Explorer 7 Crashes in Vista | |

A lot of you may have seen Internet Explorer crash "Internet Explorer has stopped working" when closing the browser in Windows Vista. It happens all too often and while it no longer takes the operating system out with it, it is still annoying. There are a lot of reasons why Internet Explorer will do this, but one we have found that really stands out is Adobe's Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX [COM Client] control. Seven (7) of ten (10) IE 7 crashes I have personally seen, are related to the Flash Player plug-in. | ||

| Thanks for the writeup, Lloyd. In my experience, 10 out of 10 IE 7 crashes are related to the Flash Player (thank goodness for IE7Pro!!). Things have improved considerably since ~last summer or so, though, and now it's pretty rare that I see IE 7 crash. Flash sometimes stops working properly (e.g., a YouTube video will play for about 2 seconds, then stop; I usually just open another IE instance in this case--it's very nice that you can start multiple instances!), but rarely does IE 7 crash outright anymore. And I push it hard--I have a vertical resolution of 1600, and often the tab drop-down will exceed the vertical length of the screen, plus I'll have more than one window open (usually in the same iexplore.exe process, albeit the others have just a handful of tabs). |

| One other plug-in that folks should watch out for, though, is one that comes with Lenovo's system images (I think it's part of their Client Security software). If you're wondering why there is a significant delay when opening a new tab, try disabling the "CPwmIEBrowserHelper"add-in. The problem will go away immediately. |
