Last month, I wrote about the FUD surrounding Windows Vista and DRM. The FUDmaster is Peter Gutmann, a New Zealand researcher who wrote a paper last December that made a series of outrageous and inflammatory claims about Windows Vista. Since then, Gutmann has expanded the paper to more than four times its original size. The current version available on Gutmann’s website clocks in at more than 26,000 words, making it longer than some recent works of fiction. And length isn’t the only thing Gutmann’s paper has in common with the average pulp novel. Gutmann’s work is riddled with factual errors, mistaken assumptions and unproven assertions, distortions, contradictions, misquotes, and outright untruths. In short, it’s a work of fiction all on its own. Gutmann is a clever writer, and he’s able to string together nouns, verbs, technical terms,and acronyms in ways that sound persuasive. In this three-part series (look for Parts 2 and 3 later this week), I’m going to dig deep into Gutmann’s work and show you just where he got it wrong. | ||

It is the modern world.
Facts matter less than how loudly one can scream. The mob mentality - undereducated - under-informed and worse, with no inclination to improve either. Add a little money from MS's big competitors, as paid out to professional bloggers and the mob is set loose. It isn't new at all - it's a tactic that has been used for thousands of years, because it works. We can share all the facts in the world and prove them all wrong, but the mob doesn't have the patience to listen long enough to come to understand. Some days the best it ever gets is to say, "Eff-it, let em drone on and let em stay on SD. We'll just keep building and enjoying HD and whatever else we care to do." It's not as if many in the mob are going to pursue the systems that can play it in any case - heck, many of them are still in the rack and will remain there until sometime between 2 and 4 PM today. We'll try again tomorrow. |

It's been said at 95% of everything is crap......that goes in spades for the internet. I try to teach my students in my physics classes that just because it's on the internet, does not mean it's correct/true. I can only hope that the message sinks in at some level. |

I have absolutely NO problem with DRM as long as:
1. It treats me as a paying customer. 2. I can use the things I pay good money for however I wish, for my own use. 3. Reinstallation causes no issues. 4. In the case of Music/Video, I can use my paid-for entertainment on any device I wish, as long as it's for my personal use. Hmmm.... I guess I have a big ass problem with DRM :) TL |

#3, Oh... I think there is a difference...
If a man chooses mediocrity, and chooses to abandon the pursuit of excellence, then that is fine - so long as he is willing to accept the full weight of the consequences attending the decisions made. Where it becomes a real problem for me, many others and society in general is in two areas: where the state imposes mediocrity [by more methods than there is room in the database server itself to record], or where the mob and the state demand elevation to a higher and unearned station regardless of the decisions people make. [that is the fastest way to destroy a republic and the surest way to ensure that classes remain distant from one another where it matters - among the ideals and values underwriting public policy. - e.g., classes begin to matter inappropriately - where wealth creates lines separating them. Soldiers and teachers, for example, may not be wealthy, but their station within society is and should be a very high one and on par with the clergy and medical doctors. State mandated mediocrity destroys that.] Thank you, #4 - for being a teacher and for imparting knowledge and not just dispensing a record. I not only hope, I pray that your efforts reverse a very dangerous trend that places all of us at great risk. |
