Microsoft is preparing an upgrade to its anti-piracy technology aimed at bridging the gap that continues to separate online music subscription services and portable devices such as MP3 players. Code-named Mercury, the upgrade will add features to the company's Windows Media digital rights management software that sits on handhelds, MP3 players and similar gadgets. The company has had a version of the software available for portable devices since 1999, but that version has had fewer features than technology Microsoft produces for PCs. | ||

You are, of course, correct. Now, with all this copy protection nonsense going on, eventually the public en-mass will finally understand what is really going on when they plunk down $15+ for that CD and... The poople is gonna hit the fan. Once the general public actually understands _what_ they are really getting for their $15, I firmly believe sales will tank and the media industry will have shot themselves in the proverbial foot. People don't understand just how limited their rights are to the materials they are purchasing, and once they do, it's gonna be all over. The RIAA and MPAA are bringing this upon themselves, and they are going to face a fiery tailspin into nothingness once it's all over. And they will deserve everything they get. TL |
