Sun aiming office software at mainstream | |

SAN FRANCISCO--Sun Microsystems' StarOffice software package--a competitor of Microsoft Office--is moving more toward the mainstream with the coming release of version 6, Sun Chief Operating Officer Ed Zander said Wednesday. StarOffice, which Sun acquired in 1999, has thus far failed to grow much beyond the fringes of the computing world. Sun hopes to change that with the next version by securing customers in big business and outside the United States, Zander said. The tough task is to get the product to customers. Zander said that testimony from Gateway executives at the Microsoft antitrust trial has revealed that Microsoft's licensing agreements make it difficult for them not to use Windows XP (news - web sites). And to get widespread distribution of desktop software, "you've got to get AOL, or a Compaq, HP, IBM or Dell," Zander said. | ||

Excellent!
Hopefully StarOffice is decent. With some competition, may Microsoft will finally _improve_ Office (performance and stability) instead of piling on useless features once a year so they can line their revenue coffers from the upgrade fee's (which are pretty much forced upon Corporations now). I use Office 2000 and XP every single day. It's good. But it needs serious work 'under the hood', not more features piled on that no one uses. TL |

#1, I don't know what's wrong with you, buy my OfficeXP runs perfectly. And I absolutley adore smart tags, makes life SOOOO much easier, the the new taskpane on the side makes everything so much more accessable so I can get my stuff done more effciently.
Ok, now it's starting to sound like an ad for OfficeXP, but none the less, it's all true. |

TechLarry - Could you please go into more detail about why you think OfficeXP is slow and unstable? Oh, and maybe you could point out some of those features you feel are useless?
I just find your comment interesting because OfficeXP is smaller and faster than Office2000, and I have not had any stability problems. It's the most impressive piece of software I have ever used, in terms of the quality. Things work as expected and I don't have to implement very many workarounds. I just think it'd be nice if you backup your statements every once in a while with some examples or facts. |

I've used WordPerfect Office, StarOffice, and Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office wins hands down. I try new things, but they still don't measure up to the feature set and ease of use of Microsoft Office. FYI, a little civility in your posting would be appreciated. I can certainly understand your point without the childish name calling. |

Actually I believe the airforce was standardizing on NT and office 2 years ago..
All speadsheet documents from CBO,OMB,IRS are in xls,csv,and .txt format.. tends to make me think they all seem to like Excel just fine. Thats Congressional Budget Office, Office of Management and Budget, and well I think you all know the other one.. :) |
