Maybe Microsoft is doing to itself what the Justice Department has refused to do -- inject some real competition in the desktop-computing marketplace. Maybe Sun Microsystems is getting ready to see if it can take advantage of the opening. That possibility emerged Tuesday at the Linux World Conference and Expo in San Francisco, where Scott McNealy, Sun's chief executive, delivered a keynote speech and spoke with reporters. He and members of his executive team offered little but hints, but what they did offer was at least interesting.
