Microsoft: Some Computers Cannot Upgrade to Windows Vista | |

Microsoft has published a list of computers from the Tokyo-based manufacturer Toshiba that cannot upgrade to Windows Vista. The Redmond Company offers no explanation why no less than 13 models of Toshiba computers cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista. This despite the fact that some of the models more than satisfy the minimum system requirements of the latest operating system from Microsoft. “The following Toshiba portable computers cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista: Satellite R15 series, Satellite L25 series, Satellite L2 series, Satellite M45 series, Satellite M55 series, Satellite M65 series, Satellite A70 series, Satellite A75 series, Satellite M30X series, Satellite M35X series, Satellite P35 series, Portege - M200 series Tablet PC and Tecra M2 series. These portable computers were originally manufactured and designed to support only Microsoft Windows XP,” reads a fragment of Knowledge Base article 934559. | ||

| i suspect it is due to hard wired boot locations in the bios. i had an hp that was the same way using windows 98 se, couldn't boot anything else. lost two hard drives learning that :(:( |

| Top notch engineering by Toshiba. WTF were they thinking? In any case, there's always Virtual PC 2004, if the machine has at least one gig of RAM. |

The first commercial computer we upgraded to Vista Ultimate was a Toshiba M400 Tablet PC.
While the Tablet ended up with a WEI that was pretty decent and it now runs very well, the process did have a "Warp Suckage Factor" of about 9.9 The process took about 7 hours even though we had sourced all drivers ahead of time. [migrating user files back out of Windows.old taking the longest as Vista performs its initial indeces, etc...] The phrase... "well, it's doing something..." was often muttered throughout the process. The user is delighted with the machine and Vista runs as well on it as Vista Certified versions of the same machine we have sold most recently. It however, in no way compares to the R400, which is just a really nice PC - users really like that model. Word of caution here, the docking stations for he M400 will give techs a few headaches at first and when used with a second monitor, at the same time the tablet's screen is used the highest res one may run is 1024 x 768 in 32 bit color at 60Hz - the new docks do now feature DVI out - so that is a plus. ***Most of the people that can afford this kind of bundle are 40+ professionals - so they tend to want a lower res in most cases - as a simple matter of having older eyes. |
