Tool cracks Vista activation for the ultrapatient | |

A Web site posted a tool yesterday that can apparently crack Windows Vista's activation process by applying brute force -- and lots of time -- to come up with valid product keys, circumventing one of Microsoft's most important antipiracy methods. KezNews.com posted information about, and a tool for, cranking out legitimate Windows Vista activation keys. But even though the tool churns through 20,000 keys an hour, it could take billions -- maybe trillions -- of years to work through all the possible combinations. Microsoft said it is investigating the attack. "We're looking into this issue now," said Alex Kochis, senior product manager of WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) , on the group's blog. | ||

| 20,000 useless keys in an hour is meaningless. Billions of years to find a crack? Funny stuff. Must have been a very slow news day. |

| #1: It says it could take billions of years to work through all possible combinations. However, most people don't need a list of all possible activation keys. One or two, probably less than 10, would be quite sufficient for most people. On the other hand, this is only the first step towards making a better keygen. I'm sure some bright kid with lots of time on his/her hands will take this concept, and greatly improve on it in time. Such is the nature of the DRM / WGA beast. |

Uh, no.... - But it seems that the poster has fessed up to the prank and no such key-gen ever existed. At least that is the story today. You have to love the Internet for the stories and rumors that seem to take on a life of their own.

#5, No need to - I bought my copies of Vista.
That said, Computer User himself said it did not work and he was only experimenting with the format. He stated in his posts, it doesn't work and I created it. Read the threads from his posts and those on his forum. The hoax part came from morons in our press that jumped all over the story without looking into the facts and Computer User stated as much - he called anyone that held out that they had generated valid keys with the tool either a liar, or mistaken. Also, the films on the net which claim to exhibit the crack have been denounced as fakes. It is unfortunate that stories like this get such play - it is worse that such talented young people seem to waste so much energy on projects that could get them into more than a little hot water - even if they fail. Someone needs to hire these kids and give them some direction and help them create great software that helps people. |
