That is a cool video, and Allchin is definately a cool guy. But I have some concerns after viewing this. At the beginning of the video, Jim says there are so many cool things about Vista that he doesn't know where to begin. Then later on, when he's demoing the system, he can't think of anything to show us? He demos a few things then says he can't think of what else to demo? I understand it wasn't a prepared demo, but you've been working with the product for 5 years. After 5 years of development all there is to show is a sidebar, a cool app for the New York Times, a Contoso app, Ready Boost and the Reliabilty Monitor? Speaking of the Reliability Monitor, did you notice that the first thing Jim did after launching the Reliablity Monitor was resize the window and the columns? That really gets on my nerves. Can't Vista (or any OS) be smart enough so that I don't have to spend my time rearranging everything for proper viewing. It seems like every time I lauch an app to work in, I'm resizing colums and moving things around.
I look forward to Vista, but honestly I was looking forward to alot more than what they've delivered. |

We are all not entirely pleased with Vista being much less then what Bill Gates promised us years ago. I expect that the deleted features (except for an efficient database file system) will be added in the next four years, which according to Ballmer, will bring us two more versions of Windows. Vista is not likely to be any more annoying than XP was upon release, even with 500 bugs unfixed and over 2000 reported bugs dismissed during development.
It is unfortunate that Allchin was apparently too fatigued to have a complete and lucid presentation ready. |

| Well I am afraid that in order to see what "Longhorn" was supposed to be we will have, hopefully, to wait for "Vienna". I said hopefully because I am not sure that some of the most graphical enhancements envisioned for "Longhorn" like "Pie menus" and others shown in some demonstrations at the PDC will be even in "Vienna". |

#1, Great post.
Vista suffers from its own lengthy and highly visible gestation more than anything else. The decision to present nearly all its features up front and over such a long and publicly available way has resulted in a familiarity that has been a little harmful to Vista. People have seen it "all" already and a sense of, "so that is all there is....?" appears to be a common sentiment. Countering with, "Have you used it all, or integrated it all?" hasn't been asked yet - mush less evolved. What Vista is and means hasn't even been scratched at much less universally understood for what I think it is.... the first large step toward complete virtualization of the namespace and a democratization of all network types - yet, still being compliant with ever more stringent regulations and compliance policies. |

If you really want to hear a presentation with all the nifty doodads it offers, wait for the commercials or only listen to the marketing drivel. Hell, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/features/default.mspx and read. But don't berate a man who's been neck deep in the stuff and living it day to day for the last 3 years to really know how to expressly "sell" it to you, especially don't expect that on a channel9 MSDN presentation. That's not what the chat was about, and that's not expressly what the site is about. |
