Owners of an Xbox don't necessarily need to wait until the November launch of Microsoft's Xbox Live to get their console online. With a modification chip and a little technical ingenuity, the Xbox can now act as a simple Web server running on the Linux operating system. This feat is made possible by a loosely organized group of programmers centered in Europe, who have created a version of the Linux core, or kernel, that can load on the Xbox hardware. The Xbox Linux Project, as it is called, draws on the fact that the Xbox is based on industry-standard PC hardware, and in fact plans to turn the machine into a fully functional PC--albeit one that only costs $200. | ||

But MS will lose more money in the process if the Linux users don't buy games.
Plus, you pay more like $300 - $350 when you include tax/shipping on the XBOX and mod chip. $400 or more if you want a pre-modded BOX. This post was edited by n4cer on Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at 17:28. |

so let me get this straight... I can serve my simple web documents through my $400 xbox web server...
or I can host the same documents for FREE at MSN (http://groups.msn.com/) or Yahoo (http://groups.yahoo.com/). These mod chips are truly giving us a rare glimpse into the bizarro business sense of linux developers. LOL. These guys are idiots. And every minute they spend on this project, is one less minute they will spend developing an app for Java, Apple, or Symbian. |

| So you claim that Red Hat has business sense? According to the financial reports I read, they've yet to turn a profit. Companies with good business sense usually do that. |

Great point BobSmith! ArkiMage, lets see what WallStreet thinks of RedHat's "business sense".
Their stock is currently at $5.35 (laughable), with only $900M market cap (over-valued). Heck, Navision was worth 50% more than this stock. And my, oh my... take a look at those HORRIBLE financials... http://biz.yahoo.com/fin/l/r/rhat.html $19M in GROSS REVENUE for the ENTIRE 3 month period. Hard to believe those horrible numbers can come from such a sound business plan (charging for free stuff). |

I don't think you are as financially wise as your name would imply.
I have a fair understanding of business. I understand that most companies don't incorporate and instantly turn a profit. I also understand that companies the have good business plans don't always make it in the market. Further, I understand that companies with poor business plans usually don't make it in the market. Let's talk for a minute here about .com companies. Amazaon should hardly be held as a poster child for success as a technology company. If in five years they still around without major restructuring, then I'd concede that they are a success. If you'll remember, Amazon in its entire lifetime has had ONE profitable quarter. If I read EDGAR correctly they went public in March of 1997. Presumably they were in business for at least a year prior to that. So that is six years (at least) and the company has had only one profitable quarter. We'll yet see whether they make it or not. eBay is another story. They make money. They make money consistantly. They went public in '98. They been profitable for quite a while now. They didn't make excuses for themselves. They put together a solid business, and they made money. Kudos to eBay! Now, let's look at Red Hat. Founded in 1995 http://www.redhat.com/about/corporate/milestones.html (that's 7 years ago) they are still not profitable. They aren't as in debt as Amazon.com is, so perhaps there is a bright future ahead of them. I wouldn't count on it though. It seems that seven years is quite long enough to establish a profitable corporation. I wasn't bashing a linux company. I was attacking the unsound business practices of Red Hat. Red Hat just happens to be a linux vendor. |
