Cisco exec: Windows Vista is scary | |

LONDON--Bob Gleichauf, the chief technology officer in Cisco Systems' security technology group, has raised concerns that integrating Vista into a complex IT infrastructure could present problems. "Parts of Vista scare me," Gleichauf said at the Gartner Security Summit here on Monday. "Anything with that level of systems complexity will have new threats, as well as bringing new solutions. It's always a struggle in security, trying to build for what you don't know." | ||

#1, Oh I don't know about that...
I think he is on to something. Recent tests we have run - Windows Vista RC-1 behind a WG FB X Class firewall with the latest 8.3 image installed reflected that the WG was unable to recognize Vista's packets and could not route them. Even website requests would not be routed. Even the latest ISA Server 2000/2004/2006 firewall client will not run on Vista - though one may run as a secure NAT and or web proxy client [the best method is to run as all three client types]. So there are some real concerns here and we have yet to determine what all the answers/resolutions "might" be - much less what they actually will be. There is a very long way to go with Vista - not saying that the effort will not be worth it in the long run - after all, all the web services API's will need a compatible client - I am saying, as I assess the article suggests, it is going to require effort - some of which is scary as not all variables are known. Personally - I say let it slip - a lot, and let's see both an RC2 and more time for VAR's/ISV's and partners to do the work they will need a great deal of support from Microsoft to accomplish - do it not and spotty driver support as was the case with W2K Pro's release will seem like a walk in the park compared to wall many partners are going to hit. |
