Thanks Mike. This month see a 1.75 million increase in the number of sites found by the survey. There is a large increase in Europe, particularly in Germany, where Apache is extremely strong, and in Denmark. Additionally, the survey found significant numbers of new sites using the .biz and .info domains. Somewhat offsetting this, several large US based bulk hosters and domain registration businesses are seeing declines in sites. In particular, the decline in sites running Netscape-Enterprise is substantially due to a reduction in sites hosted on a system run by Verisign at Digex. Around 100,000 sites seem to have been moved to another system controlled by Verisign running Microsoft-IIS at Interland with a further 150,000 small sites lapsed. | ||

Hmm, usually people are quick to point out MS's gains, where are you now? Oh, Apache had some of its biggest gains on MS in a long time--I guess it helps to actually count more web sites.
On a non-flaimbait note, it's time they drop NSCE from their graphs and break out Zeus from other. |

stu, I read the numbers, looked at the graph, and read the text. This month they finally saw a fair number drop old Netscape installations--most of these went to IIS. At the same time, they discovered a lot of sites they previously hadn't counted--they were Apache sites.
Do I see a long term trend. Not exactly, but I'm also use to the softies saying, "Apache sucks, it'll be dead in a year" when they drop, or MS advances on them, by 1 or 2 percent. That's my point. If that point manages to crawl up your @ss, I'm sorry but it's the truth. Where did I say anyone was doomed, stu? Why do you have to respond irrationally to something that isn't even real? Why do you have to make up things to get bothered by? |

By the way, it's natural but working at it helps: this time with 1 post--with the closest thing to an insult being "where are you now?"--I got 4 insults from 2 posters.

EMR, I'm not sure if we are agreeing or not. I said "not exactly" particularly for some of the reasons you mention. However, if you look at the trend starting at 98 as you mention there is a small but discernable upward movement for Apache as compared to the more sideways movement of IIS.
This is more discernable if you look at the second graph, which looks at raw numbers instead of %s and a shorter timeframe so there is a more apparent amplitude. From July 2000 to July 2001, IIS and Apache growth looks about similar with Apache maybe achieving a more rapid growth slope. But this actually changes, relatively, dramatically in the last six months--I personally attribute this to actually receiving better results from their polling, which more accurately reflects Apache's greater marketshare then previously believed. |

It boils down to what you are doing with the website. IIS is more widely deployed to e-commerce and dynamic content sites. Apache is extremely popular with "Hi my name is bob and I registered lollilagag.com"... i.e. places like register.com that have put up hundreds of thousands of sites which server nothing but a single page.
With the advent of .Net you'll see even more marketshare going towards IIS in the dynamic content front. As far as the static content front... who cares? It's not like there is any market in supporting that. |
