Microsoft still ironing out IM kinks | |

Problems started as far back as mid-January, with many people reporting similar troubles: Messenger disconnecting without notice anywhere from five minutes to about 15 minutes after signing on, and people occasionally appearing disconnected to their "buddies" even during instant messaging exchanges. Those people using Windows Messenger, which is only available as part of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system, appear to be suffering the most consistent disconnects. Users of MSN Messenger for Windows and the Mac client software, which can be downloaded from Microsoft's Web site, seem to be less affected by the glitch. Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger technically run on the same messaging network but use different technologies to make and maintain connections. | ||

I'm not aware of any firewall that blocks port 80 inbound traffic by default. You'd have an awful hard time browsing the web if it did. :)
I experience every one of these glitches daily with messenger as I use it as my primary means of communication over the web. It does get quite annoying, nice to see it's being addressed. I can only hope... This post was edited by aamendala on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 12:52. |

#2 - Browsing the web does not require an inbound connection on port 80; it requires an *outbound* connection on port 80.
If I connect to a site with the HTTP protocol, it sends the all request outbound to port 80, and uses a random local port above 1024. All responses from the web server are sent back to me on the port I included in the outgoing packet. Each outgoing packet is likely to have a different local port, although they will typically be within a certain range. Most firewalls "listen" for outgoing requests, and note the port they used locally for the outgoing request. It then automatically opens that port up for the application that's using it. This isn't really what's going on internally, but it's useful to think of it that way. The only time you should have to manually unblock ports is if you are functioning as a server of some kind, accepting uninitiated incoming requests. |

First read this about how to remove your passport account from your XP account ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\Key.chm::/key_howto_view.htm Then to keep it from auto signing in on logon just don't check "Save Password" when you logon. Its simple. |

| activewin, i'm dissapointed in you guys...you could've been first to report on this, I brought it to your attention over a week ago..anyways, cnet got it so now it's out.....and for all you who think it's a firewall issue, your wrong..we in the newsgroup(microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger) have been trying to fix this issue for some time now and have tried everything, but nothing seems to work.
