The BBC IT department has evidently taken the Microsoft shilling, in some style. Our sources informed us a while back that the company is spending a total of £61 million on Windows upgrades for approximately 24,000 desktops, and now an internal memo leaked to Silicon.com reveals that it has banned staff from using any non-Microsoft PDA with company machines. So BBC staffers using Palms and Psions (Psion, incidentally, is based not a molotov cocktail's throw from Beeb HQ) can deem themselves security threats, and have until summer of next year to switch or stop using them with the company kit. | ||

I have heard of a number of problems with the recent versions of the Palm software for syncing... I can understand support issues, but I'm not sure about this security claim?
Yet with the Register's predisposition for fantasy, there is probably no truth to this article. |

I don't see what the question is here. If I had a company that big I would standardize on one OS when possible. If there is a specific need for Palm in an application then they will probably allow it... kinda like the Mac for graphics and such in a company. Where #2 got "predatory pricing practices" I'll never know... its just an IT department making an educated decision and his/her mention of "Nokia's Communicator just recently surpassed Palm" means nothing because that takes into account the consumer/corporate use not corporate only use. Corporate use is where the PocketPC will own because of its ability. Palm and the like are good for the house wife and teenagers in that they are inexpensive and perform the small tasks that are needed. You can build much more robust applications and the like for MS's PocketPC. Also, I really don't know about the security thing but I would bet they had a reason which they found in researching the issue that compelled them to make that statement as well. How the hell is a Palm-based pda a security threat?
Eh... who cares. These are decisions made by corporate bureaucracy and have little basis in reality. |

No chozsun, they are apparently being forced to use faster, intuitive PDA's powered by Microsoft PocketPC.

I hate to say it, but aside from features (which are great and far better than PalmOS for the most part), I hate PocketPC.
I find the interface daunting and very unintuitive. It's different in many ways from the standard Windows UI, but it's different for "difference sake" and it's very anoying. Just mho... but PocketPC needs a LOT of work. |
