A company that took its time, did everything right, and migrated to Vista recounted the full horror of the experience. According to their account, company employees found Vista to be slow, Explorer to be problematic, and other quirks that left them less than satisfied. The Transit company took the optimal path. They waited for the typical new release bugs to be worked out. They purchased a new PC from a major vendor, Lenovo, that had Vista pre-installed in order to avoid upgrade nightmares. Finally, they kept the installed software on the computer at a minimum to avoid complications. | ||

Fire Mr. Kidman. His incompetence amazes me.
"Another irritating problem related to using a local file as an HTML home page. Mr. Kidman reported that this was hopeless effort with Vista, "...since Internet Explorer insists on launching any page in a new window because of a security restriction. As such, Vista has managed to convince us to ditch Internet Explorer after nine years and switch to Firefox, which doesn't indulge in such ridiculous behaviour, and seems to run faster as well."" It's quite simple, Mr. Kidman. When viewing local files, IE Protected Mode is turned off. When you click a link to a non-protected-mode site, such as an internet page, it needs to turn protected mode on, which requires launching a new process and thus a new window. The reason why Firefox doesn't "indulge" in that "ridiculous behavior" is because it doesn't support any form of protected mode at all. The smallest bit of knowledge about IE protected mode, or googling the issue, would tell you that you should add a mark of the web to your home page to make IE think it's in the internet zone. I'm not here to argue whether IE should make it easier to use local HTML files as home pages out-of-the-box. I'm saying that if Mr. Kidman was unable to figure out the solution, and uses *this* issue as the reason to switch to Firefox, he is showing his incompetence in administering the Windows Vista platform. I surely wouldn't want him in charge of any IT project. Imagine how much trouble he'd have administering Linux machines! |

nope. not clicking on it. but fwiw, what would mac observer know about an enterprise deployment. that alone has me laughing. |

Why the Mac press are so worried about Vista?? If it´s all this bad nightmare for all the world, why the Mac people cares? Really wanted to know...
BTW, I use Vista since the end of last year (with RCs) and never had a single nightmare about it... This post was edited by asantissp on Monday, May 14, 2007 at 20:45. |

| Using Windows Vista here at home and at work and it is awesome. Longhorn Server Beta 3 is great as well. It just doesn't get any better than Windows and Active Directory. Microsoft really has something going there that won't be beaten out for a long time I think. Tie in the .NET Framework and a rich set of development tools and you cannot beat Windows and Windows Server in the enterprise. Vista is strong. I run a ThinkPad T42p with Vista installed and it runs great. I'm familiar with Lenovo's craplets - I only install the Active Protection system for my hard disk's safety - other than that the others are pretty darn pointless. |

| #1: Why does he have to do all that? Why can't IE figure out the page it's loading is coming off the local disk and treat it as a trusted zone? If you can't trust your own computer, what can you trust? |
