FBI warns on Windows XP hole | |

Thanks Jamie. The FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center has urged users of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system to disable a feature that could leave computers open to attacks from hackers. In a statement issued Saturday, the FBI's NIPC, which usually leaves computer security warnings to the private sector, said it held technical discussions with Microsoft and other industry experts Friday to identify ways to minimize the risk from security holes in the XP software, which was launched in late October. | ||

3000+? That's amazing... since I've only heard of 2 holes in XP. I must be outta the loop or something.
One thing to note, the FBI "warning" is nothing more than an advisory, which ranks below both the official "Warning" and "Alert" that the FBI puts out. In fact, this "warning" was never meant to attract much attention... so it seems that the anti-MS media bias shines through once again. | #14: The hole has been demonstrated, so it's not just theory. I believe the wording was meant to infer that it has ONLY been performed in a lab environment, and, as far as anybody knows, has never actually been used in an attack. |

| #17 You think sending out CD's would ensure updates ocurred? Even if that were possible (which it isn't), do you think every person to receive the disk(s) would install? Why it isn't possible: without mandatory registration, how does Microsoft know where you live? Or even iwth mandatory registration, how do they know if you move? Send out disks (other than on demand) would never work. |

Please, people NIPC has done very little and very rarely makes comments like this -- this is a very serious hole.
RMD, they never meant for this to be a big announcement? Baloney! When else has NIPC and the FBI ever commented on a security problem with a non-MS piece of software? You all whine about the Feds spending money to prosecute MS, well, I've got a problem with them researching MS's security problems and getting the word out for them. And Paul's got it wrong again... the Register (flame on) actually spoke with the guys who reported it, and in fact, they reported the flaw the day after XP was released. MS sat on this for 2 months. Jugulator, of course you don't use UPnP; there are no 3rd party hardware products that use it -- that just shows how pathetic MS is about security: great, whizz bang, our products can do this or that even though nobody wants it or needs it, but it does leave a great big remote network security hole though! Please buy -- it's our best product ever! What's up with you guys and Magic Latern; you're trying to act all balls out hack and privacy nuts, but you run MS software? Get a life! |
