Network worms are shutting down computers running Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system, security experts warned Tuesday. Computers across the United States are being hit, including those at cable news station CNN, television network ABC and The New York Times. Tokyo-based antivirus company Trend Micro blames the havoc on various worms, including the Zotob worm that hit the Internet over the weekend and new variants of the Rbot worm. | ||

| I tired with both maxthon and firefox - both don't show any ads on the screen and no pop ups. Perhaps you should give them a try and turn on all of the ad blocking stuff. |

That's funny. My company has been using Symantec AV for 4 years (2 servers, 25 clients) and has never had a problem or a virus. Nor have my two home PC's running NAV (varoius versions, from 2001-2005), and the one running SAV. Interesting thing about daily updates, they really aren't necessary as a matter of course. Most of the major vendors, Symantec and McAfee included, will update on a daily basis when warranted (like this week), but why update daily and waste the bandwidth (which many who are still on dial up don't have nearly enough of) when there's no need to? If you really want that extra special "warm fuzzy feeling" of daily updates, Symantec does make them available, and it's rather easy to automate that process if you choose to. The only folks who have a "right" to get a virus are the ones who don't have ANY AV or firewall protection, and those who for some inexplicable reason choose not to apply critical software updates. |

According to WinInformant, MS is now blaming the companies that have been victimized by the latest worm barrage and downplaying the effects. "Stupid companies, you deserve what you're getting because you aren't running XP, or didn't think to install obscure hotfix MS05-039." Nice, MS. Real nice.

Obscure? With all the publicity Microsoft gets around security? With webcasts and SUS and WSUS being free and all it takes is a couple of clicks to deploy an update to thousands of PC's? Now, if you really want to talk obscure, try getting your head around 10,000 open source security patches this year. "Hmmm. Did I apply patch number 4,567 on my Ubuntu box? Or patch 8,698?" I mean, Microsoft has released just 40 or so patches for all of 2005 for its OS, while Apple released over 40 in one day yesterday. Keeping Windows boxes up to date with patches is simple. |
