Creative's self-declared 'MP3 player war' against Apple isn't going very well | |

"MP3 player maker Creative Technology failed to outsell Apple's iPod during the holiday sales season, it emerged today when the company published its financial results for the period. Apple last week said it had sold 4.5 million iPods in the three months to 31 December 2004 more than double the 2 million Creative today admitted it sold during the period, which equates to the second quarter of its FY2005," Tony Smith reports for The Register. "Clearly, Creative is not winning the war it declared against its rival last November. Back then, Creative chairman and CEO Sim Wong Hoo bullishly said: 'It's our target to beat iPod in this quarter.'" | ||

It's all relative. Creative declared war, they said they'd take marketshare. Instead they lost more money and lost marketshare.
Creative entered the mp3 player market in March of 1999 and has only sold only about 5 million devices (Half of which are entirely antiquated and should probably not be factored in as any userbase). Apple entered the market in October, 2001 and has sold over 10 million devices. Creatives sales were up year-over-year 50% (which includes all products). Apple's iPod sales were up year-over-year 525%. Creatives' profits plummetted. Even excluding the one time charges (which exceed a profit loss of 50 million), they lost more than 3 million. (If they lose more money the more they sell, I hope they continue at this pace.) Apple's profits soared to $295 million, up from $63 million. Revenue was $3.49 billion (3.5 x the value of Creative), up 74%. Creatives' stock fell 15% the day after announcing and has subsequently continued to slide downward. Apple's stock after 350% increase over last year continues to climb upward. It looks like, about, 4%. (Around $69 on the 12th, up to $72+ today.) Creatives margins continue to fall. Apple's margins were up from 26.7% to 28.5%. And... Has their advertising campaign even begun yet? I haven't seen a thing. I actually see more advertisements for iPod accessories than I do any other device. (JBL has a huge campaign of street and subway posters advertising iPod accessories currently.) If Creative has declared war by losing marketshare, losing margins, and losing profits at the expense of greater numbers and revenues (which are still dwarfed by Apple's), they're in for trouble. Of course, this is ParkkerWorld where the least significant financial iindicators (units and revenues) are more important than the more significant factors (profit, margins, marketshare). And, of course, there's no reason to comment on Creative. I wouldn't care to comment at all... They are not significant as a whole. The only problem is: Creative is the one that began the comparisons. They declared "war." They proclaimed they will steal marketshare from Apple. What the hell are you talking about? This quarter 2. Previous quarters no where near as close. They were so bad they were afraid to give unit numbers previously. This story says it. Their own announcement: http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050111/sftu066_1.html They haven't matched historical sales. The 2 million is included in the 5 million number. Your link goes no where. But your quote shows profits fell. Or is 25.5 bigger than 28.3 in ParkkerWorld? And this excludes charges. With charges, it fell by over 53 million. Let's quote what I said: "Even excluding the one time charges (which exceed a profit loss of 50 million), they lost more than 3 million." Where's the lie? "Creative is pretty well represented in Amazon's Top 25 selling MP3 players. 6 out of 25." Pretty well indeed. Apple has #1,#3,#4,#5,#6,#7,#9. The first Creative device is #10. I only count 5 in the top 25. You didn't point out a single lie and you avoided half of my other points. If it's such crap, rebut it with the truth. |

And it'll still be less than 50% of Apple's sales despite the CEOs comments about taking marketshare away from Apple last quarter. "As for your claims that "Creatives' profits plummetted", dropping a few percentage points is not a plummet. " If the two of you could read, I provide the exact details... over 50 million includes charges is not minor... without charges, losing 2 million while selling 100% more than you've sold in the previous 4 quarters combined is a plummet. "By the way, does it bother you that Halo 2 has generated more revenue for Microsoft than every song sold on iTunes ever?" Why would it? I'm not a religious fool like yourself. |

| Lost? Creative was in the business years before Apple. It's Creative that has consistently lost marketshare to Apple. You cannot say Apple lost sales when their marketshare continues to go UP. |

Can I just say what a relief to acquire somebody who actually knows what theyre talking about on the web. You undoubtedly know methods to bring an problem to light and make it crucial. Much more people really need to read this and realize this side of the story. I cant think youre not more preferred simply because you definitely have the gift.
