you know, Microsoft's blanket support for Windows NT Server has ended. The company will cease to provide online support of the product on January 1, 2007. However, Microsoft has released updates that apply to Windows NT components. For example, the company included an update for Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows NT systems in its monthly security update release for January. You can read more about Windows NT support at the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/ProductInfo/Availability/Retiring.asp Microsoft recently announced that it will end standard support, including nonsecurity hotfixes, for Windows 2000 Server on June 30. Paid mainstream support will be available beginning on that date, paid extended support can be obtained until June 30, 2010. Security hotfixes will continue to be available, free for everybody, until March 31, 2007. | ||

I would like to see the spyware study done with a more recent Windows PC configuration such as XP w/sp2, an up-to-date virus scanner and a third party firewall.
How do the spyware test results differ if IE is configured for Internet browsing at 'High Security' except for trusted sites? How do the spyware test results differ if browsing is done using Firefox or Opera? Why aren't Virus scanners catching this crap and killing it like just another virus. |

Item 1 - It won't change much. Drive-by installs still appear to happen with SP2.
Item 2 - The problem is, most corporations can't run at that level because of custom online apps. Item 3 - I can only speak for those I know and since using FireFox I know of no one who has received a _browser based_ spyware infection. Of course the browser doesn't stop crapware like Kazaa from obliterating your machine with Spyware. Item 4 - Dude, I am SO with you on this one :) TL |

#1 and 2, Good anti-virus programs do stop spy-ware and there are many which meet and exceed the CVP - Common Vulnerabilities Protocol. CVP, like their CVE, or Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures [ see, http://mitre.org ] are excellent resources for driving products that very effectively stop and also clean mal-ware.
Good examples are http://www.pandasoftware.com 's Admin Secure for NW's of all sizes and their other stand alone clients. We have used these for years with results that exceed any of the other products we have tried and or stand-alone anti-spyware programs. CVP Servers, as with proxies at ISA 2000/2004 and RRAS on W2K3 Server have a special module that runs on the Server and it sets up a set of very simple to use filters that draw their defintions from the CVP/CVE as at Mitre [a former US Govt. private contractor for the NSA and other agencies]. The history is interesting, but a bit off topic in the strictest sense. That history is however relevant, and I hope a far larger environment of cooperation to evolve between business and governments of all types. What is cool is that both CVP and virus defintions arrive in one package and are run from one console. Communications agents are distributed to systems and anti-mal-ware updates of all types are distributed via these comms agents. Local run-time works very similarly - so the load is so slight, users can't even feel it. We've surfed some very "rough" Internet sites to test these and in each case the CVP cathes it and prevents infection. We've also gone into networks that were running many forms of commercial protection and found and killed spy-ware when no other method would work. I'd check into CVP and also CVE and really dig this stuff out - it can be done [system made safe and hard and kept that way]. I still ahve many old friends at Mitre and they are some of the most dedicated people one could ever meet - they just hate bad people doing bad things. |
