Installed SP2 on an old Inspiron 7000 and noticed no difference in performance.

Dell shipped a small number of Inspiron 1150 units with a Celeron D processor on motherboards which lacked proper BIOS support for Celeron D. This problem is easily solved by upgrading to the latest BIOS, and Dell's SP2 page recommends that customers make sure they are using the latest BIOS, not just for Inspiron 1150 but all models.
This stupid reporter skimmed a few week-old messages on the Dell support forums and wrote up a "scandalous" article, probably just so she could turn in a story early on Friday and leave for the holiday weekend. Neither Dell nor Microsoft promises any official response in the Dell support forums, so it's just ridiculous to say that Dell/Microsoft have intentionally ignored this issue. marbleless, the Inspiron brand name is used by many different motherboards and chipsets. There is nothing particular in common across the Inspiron line except that they are all low-end notebooks geared toward home/consumer (as opposed to the more expensive professional/business oriented models which use the Latitude brand name). |

Oh, really! Where did he get this BS. There were no "industry observers" saying any such thing and there have not been anywhere near these problems now that SP2 is available everywhere. Also, the above poster is right. Dell and every other hardware vendor recommends keeping your BIOS up to date. Most computer vendors have some sort of utility that can be set like Windows Update Service to automatically check the vendors web site for hardware updates. Duh! And by the way, if people with dial up are complaining that SP2 is a lengthly download all they have to do is go to Microsoft's web site and order it by mail at no cost whatsoever. I sent for my copy because I have several neighbors that are still on dial up. It took three days to arrive. And, yes, I have already lent it out to a neighbor. jdhawk, I agree that this is nonsense, but AssetMetrix is the research firm which is being widely cited by the press for their "one in ten users" projection. To their credit, they explain how they arrived at this figure. If you read it, I think you'll conclude, like I did, that their test environment was not truly typical of the entire worldwide Windows XP user base. Unfortunately, the majority of people in the world are not the types who would bother hunting down the source of the data to scrutinize it. People these days are quick to accept sound bites and headlines without question.

| If anything, after installed SP2 on all my home PCs and laptops, they seems much more responsive now compared to SP1. All my PCs are slow P3s. So those of you have faster processors may or may not notice any performance improvements. |
