Tablet PC: You'll love it, hate it--or won't care | |

For the past few weeks, I've been testing Microsoft's new Tablet PC technology. This is the next generation of what used to be called Pen Windows, which Microsoft has spent the last decade trying to perfect. While it is much improved, the search for perfection needs to continue. Last month, I was given an Acer ultraportable, designed for Tablet PC, to review. Those reviews will start publishing today, timed to coincide with a Microsoft announcement at TechXNY (the show formerly known as PC Expo). My prediction: Reviews of what is properly known as Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition will be all over the map. Why? Because the Tablet PC really puts the personal back into personal computing. | Jeff, I doubt that the price will fall like that. The Tablet PC is more akin to a laptop than a PDA, and since laptop prices remain about $1200+ for the "top of the line" models, I wouldn't expect a Tablet PC to be a cheap purchase. |

$1200 for the "Top of the line model" Laptop?
Where do I sign up? Last I saw, top-tier Laptops were $3000 and up for the really loaded one's, especially the corporate models like IBM. TL |

| Slate form-factor (No Keyboard) TabletPCs could probably be offered in the $1000 range. There will also be those that use Transmeta chips or mid-range Intel/AMD that could come into that price range (Just speculating though). However, since the most common form will be a convertable notebook, these could be offered in a range of pricepoints like conventional notebooks are currently. |
