Why #1 - it is true, is it not, that they have taken this very seriously, and despite not letting up on the sometimes unrealistic expectations we all place on them. Is it not true that several initiatives have been undertaken and very large investments made in careful and thorough implementations of effective solutions?
Is it also not reasonable for any such company to expect that operators of networks and systems take at least basic steps to protect not only their own networks, but the networks of others? Certainly fair, if free tools like updates, ICF and Windows Firewall and even RRAS - especially in W2K3 Server, are provided. What of the work done to supply very effective API"s to AV and third party firewall vendors; RPC over HTTPS [with or without ISA Server 2000/2004] supporting Secure connections to Exchange 2003? How about planned support for SMB on 443 was well [SSL VPN, essentially to the end point mapper and DS Services]?
One could also measure the self-imposed delays in Longhorn, the back-porting of its code to XP to address these issues. What of FastCode and other tools to check for vulnerabilities, or NX and XD technologies and coordination with chip makers? What do we have a right to expect MS, or any company that they are not actively doing? Do some simply want them to go away entirely...and leave which parties to fill that void? Someone has to lead in this industry!
Others lead in so many areas, WalMart and Home Depot in Retail; Exxon/Mobile in fuels products; Kerr McKee in off-shore systems; Boeing in aviation....I say over and over, build better stuff, or a related company with enough value to present an acquisition model favorable to MS's shareholders and execute an M&A "if" it works for those same shareholders and the management team - e.g., "Let business be business..." Despite its horns, it sure has made for a far more universally high standard of life - not just living in this country.
I'll make an open invitation to anyone - come see us; come see true hetergeneous operations and see which companies using which technologies are profitable and frankly "happy."
At least run all this stuff to feed the people you care for and then comment after some thought - uinless of course one feels compelled to simply vent - but vent what? MS never made a soul buy or run anything. I mean I count over 30 OS'es on my shelves. Run and develop for any one of them - make it great, sell it and earn market share. At least tell the companies what it will take to make you satisfied - if that is at all possible.
