Stable? Secure? Please! They didn't get it right in Server 2003....
Huh? If you're going to tout OSS, why not compare it to other OSS OSes, like Linux? It fares pretty darn well. |

I read the article. It's pure speculation from a tinfoil hat wearing paranoid OSS zealot.
Companies patent ideas all the time, for various reasons, that doesn't make them anti-competitive or monopolistic. The only FUD I ever read comes from the linux folks (*insert Slashdot reference here*); wheras MS tends to be more up front. Many linux folks, such as this article's author, need to come out of mom's basement and get a clue. |

Hmm, who was it who wrote this... Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols Ahh yes, the guy who back in 1999 was running benchmarks of IIS on NT4 to Apache on Linux using boxes with only 64 Megs of RAM. I duplicated the benchmarks on my home systems and with 128 Megs of RAM, IIS was faster, or if I did some tweaking to have IIS use all available memory. It all had to do with caching the dataset. I sent him an email asking him about this, and he simply acknowledge his bias, saying he was trying to demonstrate how poorly IIS performed on low end machines. But in 1999 having 128 Megs of RAM wasn't that unusual. The fact that I had 128 Megs in my "test" machine didn't seem to register. RH7.3 - Considering his "server" was a desktop with a 4 Gig IDE drive... yep, it wasn't hard to do. As for the clients... you don't need 30 machines to simulate 30 connections to a web server.
The main point, which I don't see you disputing, is that the workload fit within the cache memory. He designed the test poorly, he either should have used more memory to guarantee the tests were all cached, or had a larger cache data set to guarantee that it was not all cached. Depends on what you are testing. |
