The rumors just won't die: Someone, somewhere is working on porting Microsoft Office to Linux. This week's version making the rounds online: IBM Corp. is extending its Linux commitment with a Linux version of the productivity suite. On Thursday, however, Microsoft Corp. poured cold water on the reports. "Microsoft has no plans to work with IBM on porting Microsoft Office to Linux," a Microsoft spokeswoman told eWEEK.com. As for porting Office to Linux in general, she said, "It's not happening." | ||

This would be incredibly hard to do anyway.
As anyone who maintains systems running Office knows, Office sticks itself into every nook and cranny of the operating system (not necessarily a good thing when it breaks). TL |

I believe Microsoft is working on a linux version of office, but I don't believe it will ever be released. Microsoft is smart enough, and its leadership is distributed enough... that they would take this kind of action based on a "what if..." desktop linux became the bomb. The reason they will never release the product is simply because desktop linux market share (business side) will never warrant it.
Companies as big and with as comprehensive a product line as MSFT... take these steps all the time. |

| Mooresa56, I disagree. I believe Microsoft will release it. However .... not for a few years to come. |
