Total bull crap. The reason Office is the defacto standard is that its competition dropped the ball. WordPerfect was the standard for years, but its programmers sat on their laurels and let Microsoft pull ahead, and stay ahead. Lotus 123 was the standard for spread sheets, but again, their programmers refused to innovate, and ... as they say, you snooze you lose.
No, the reason Microsoft has the Lion's share of the market in OS, Office, etc... is because they have the best there is. Now.... We have to see if Microsoft will sit on their laurels, and let OpenOffice and Linux shoot past them. It could happen if Microsoft doesn't heed what happened to its former competitors. Refused to innovate... amazing, Microsoft has managed to brainwash you into their whole world of innovation's. "This is the company, after all, that as early as 1981 (according to Gates’s unauthorized biography) had as an internal R&D slogan “DOS isn’t done until Lotus won’t run.”" (http://www.seyboldreports.com/SRDP/0dp8/D0812009.HTM or http://www.aplawrence.com/Blog/B555.html) No but you must be right, Microsoft played fair and produced the better program whilst Lotus developers sat around waiting for their next innovation. If nothing else, you have a fantastic recollection of history. "The public goes for what's best, not just what's cheapest." I disagree. The public goes for what's good enough or what is the best price/performance for their particular needs (even though price than precedence over performance for most people), not what's best! Microsoft fulfills those two markets very well! |
