US bans Timed-honoured Typeface | |

In a sign that no matter is too small to affect international diplomacy, the US State Department has issued an edict banning its longtime standard typeface from all official correspondence and replacing it with a "more modern" font. In an internal memorandum distributed on Wednesday, the department declared "Courier New 12" - the font and size decreed for US diplomatic documents for years - to be obsolete and unacceptable after February 1. | ||

BTW... I wonder if they were brilliant enough to figure out that Courier is a mono-spaced font, and Times is a proportional font.

I would imagine that any needs for mono-spaced was the hold up all this time, and the above mentioned exceptions are the only docs that need to preserve mono-spacing. |

perhaps thier thinking some of the bad folks in the world just couldn't read the smaller font.. hahaha.. "saddam: well how could I comply with a document I couldn't read without 5x glasses.. i mean come on look in the other cell at tarik aziz.. see the thickness of his glasses." :)

OCR software works far better on mono-spaced fonts, so I don't think that this, in particular, has anything to do with it. Additionally, the US Government has an OCR font it specifies for documents that will be scanned. I know, I spent 11 years in the Navy trying to read the damned thing on Evaluation Reports, etc... TL |
