A humbled Microsoft prepares to boot up Windows Phone 7
Time: 07:08 EST/12:08 GMT | News Source: Wired | Posted By: Robert Stein

Windows Phone 7 is Microsoft's complete do-over of a mobile operating system after the earlier Windows Mobile plummeted in market share and popularity in the wake of Apple's consumer-savvy iPhone and Google's prolific Android devices. Referred to as "73 by the engineers developing the OS, the project has been in the works since December 2008, when Microsoft decided to scrap all of its efforts on Windows Mobile 7, which would have been an iteration of the older operating system largely focused on business customers.

Humbled??? Hardly. Perhaps if you substitute 'shameless' for 'humbled'. These are the guys that held a mock funeral for iPhone, the phone MS wishes it had. I can just see Uncle Fest-, I mean, Steve Ballmer showing up in a flight suit with a Mission Accomplished banner behind him.

"Buy a WP7 or a bucket of kittens will be thrown in to a river."
Not really, were just kitten.

while wp7 is 2 years late to the dance it is not DOA. The phone is more than enough for a first step.

1. They are also need to hire the PR firm that creates those ultra cool droid commercials.
2. Figure out a way to package laptops and phone to college kids..buy a Dell lap and get a free WP7.
3. Buy an Xbox and get a free WP7.
4. Hell, buy windows 7 and get a free Wp7

the name of the game is market share.

I agree with post #3. They have to offer deals with other products, almost give it away (for a limited time).
I watched the release demo and was more then impressed. It has a unity of design (GUI) thats missing, even in the iPhone. With the right packaged offer I would switch from my Android phone.

#5 By 16797 (99.236.143.109) at 10/13/2010 8:05:27 AM
Would be good to have a poll: are you going to buy WP7?

Personally, I have decided to wait for a while..

#6 By 1896 (68.153.171.248) at 10/13/2010 8:07:10 AM
Personally I like the GUI but the lack of removable storage and the issues with syncing with the desktop make the phone a no go for me.
Hopefully with future releases these, and other limitations like no tethering, will be solved.

#7 By 155468 (65.115.34.244) at 10/13/2010 9:51:09 AM
#6,

- surely you understand why the carriers wanted tethering turned off? it is not a technical issue. And I am pretty sure that there will be hack for it like every other phone.

- what desktop sync issue is there?
- the cloud gets tricky in "airplane mode"

#5, I will buy I want the Samsung Omnia 7 and not the Samsung Focus.

#4, I truly believe that is just a matter of marketing, those droid commericals are assume. MS need to market the games/xbox connection relentlessly.

Also I have seen no mention of the call center.

#8 By 1896 (68.153.171.248) at 10/13/2010 11:53:20 AM
#7: Of course I see why the Carriers do not want it but I never buy "Carrier crippled" phones; even the iPhone I had was bought in Europe and "SIM free" and in fact it had MMS functionality, something that the ones sold in the US did not. So the issue is that MS does not have tethering in the OS at all, not that the app is there but blocked by the carriers.

As for desktop sync it seems that, at least based on what I have seen and heard, the only way to sync it is through the Zune app and therefore there is no way to sync OneNote and other office documents. The idea that all these documents can only be synced through the cloud is, at least for me, unacceptable.

Finally I noted that in every presentation I have seen of WP7 "Tasks" is something that has never been mentioned, less than ever shown. Does the new OS handle tasks?

#7..outlook handles task and so does live calendar, so I assume that wp7 handles works the same way and syncs with the others as well.

what I want to see

1. The lock screen, hopefully I can use images, numbes or words
2. secuity on text messages and voice messages..I want to be able to let someone use my phone but not be able to read my text messages.
3. multiple exchanges..the iphone allows 1 (unless you have hack it)
4. Import/export from Iphone.
5. A front facing camera..I think that FaceTime has potential..MS could use msn messenger with video.
6. Something like BBM..All WP7 users should be able to chat/txt with each other for free.
7. Office/Mobile office/Office Web should be free with WM7.
8. We need tethering.
9. Mobile IE 9 with full HTML 5 support.
10. For the first 6 months..Microsoft should give away Mobile Games. <-not sure how feasible this is.

#10 By 1896 (68.153.171.248) at 10/13/2010 3:06:07 PM
#9: Yes Outlook does it .......... and sync with the desktop using WMDC.... How WP7 does it? It uses Zune not WMDC and again it is suspicious that these operations have never been shown.

In the beginning when you bought a WM phones Outlook was included....... than MS stopped doing it.

I will wait and see what the real story is here............

Interesting, two Exchange accounts and no unified inbox... or they changed it and now there is the option to use a single inbox?

#13 By 23275 (68.117.163.128) at 10/13/2010 5:53:52 PM
#12, Yes.

#13: Thanks for the update Iketchum. I wonder why MS, in its infinite wisdom, does not advertise these lately added functionalities......

#14: MS marketing has been a mystery long before the famous Bill Gates ass shake for Seinfeld in their series of commercials about nothing. It would be super if MS would show what the WP7 can do without distracting side imaginings or ".. was my idea" comments.

#16 By 23275 (68.117.163.128) at 10/14/2010 7:16:26 AM
#12, #13, Dunno, guys... we're partners with all of these people and I have only received one detailed slick from one carrier (AT&T), which reflects what they are actually going to ship and do (contractually).

I suspect that, because of contractual obligations and statutory language, that there is a lot of time between engineering and legal, and this creates the delay in what we actually see and can legally share. The rest is speculation on our part.

Take for example, copy and paste - I get asked a lot about that matter, but what people do not understand is how that sort of thing has to be brokered - data between apps and sharing data between apps is a big deal, because the rules are and should be that one cannot - data from one app can't access another, etc... to do so would leave the thing wide open to exploits, as bad code could do the same. So one has to control it and is not trivial to do so.

To make my point, iOS/iPhone make a big deal about having whole device encryption.... (something WinMO had from day one and it matters); it's a joke. Boot any machine into a Linuces and with the iPhone off, connect it. Then turn the iPhone on - one can read the entire thing as easily as they can a USB key. As I said, it's a joke, and that one ability should be all over the news, but it's not. <shakes head>

So for now, it has been all emulation and a lot of work in the dark. Only this week have we been given anything firm - as in rock solid this is it. I will say this, that device is amazing and the spec is really something. The scheduler and dispatcher in WPH7 is just about perfect and the OS really hauls the mail. Very fast. It's just really smooth and unlike any mobile OS out there in this regard. Oh... and it doesn't drop calls like iPhone 3GS/4 in the same areas and sounds 500% better - especially over car Bluetooth.

Well , now Paul Thurrott, someone I take "cum grano salis" states that WP7 will support removable/expandable storage.......

http://windowsphonesecrets.com/2010/10/12/windows-phone-7-and-removable-storage/

Day after day the WP7 launch seems more and more like something planned by a schizophrenic............... details announced a long time ago and confirmed over and over suddendly have changed overnight.......... and are not announced by MS.
If the statement is true this would be a huge blow to HTC devices which seems to be, at least in this first wave, without a SD slot.

#17, I fail to see the problem! so HTC built a device with an eye towards the future..

MS is trying to push the cloud angle to differentiate itself and possible tie more services together. Besides wouldn't the "slot" be more accessible if that wanted to show support.

In general the presentation sucked and the marketing so far has sucked. MS should create special edition phones that tie directly into games.

Gears of War
Halo
Fable et al

also buy a Kinect and get a WP7

#18, it's all about dev access to sockets and native code. e.g., close to the metal or on the metal. It has duck to do with marketing in this particular case.

apps (data) cannot have access to other apps' (data). Now contradict all that, and say... yes, in some limited cases we have to have that... that's the issue... how to do that without exposing apps (data)? So they have solved that and among many other things, it allows device mans. to offer slot storage, etc... and still meet the demands of enterprises that need to disable that sort of thing via policy and also how to encrypt it, etc...

These are big big big deals to guys like me that have to have customers that can control this stuff. I suspect that VZW's CDMA delay is all about that and by the by... DO NOT go to AT&T - wait on VZW, or you'll be very sorry. AT&T has had to make some nasty decision about what to favor - data over voice, etc... and they have no answer to VZW's LTE. Please do trust me on this - we write the PM/BPM software used by all carriers in their infrastructure build outs and we host it and the engineering companies that do the work. You'll want to wait on VZW for WPH7.

#18: Toward the future...... if you owned shares of AT&T or other carriers... :-)
Data plans are becoming more and more expensive and pushing this "Cloud" mantra will increase substantially the user bill.

I remember the launch of Windows 95; that was the last really good one organised by MS..... and yes there were line of people in front of CompUSA to buy the OS at midnight....... good old times when I installed Office 95 using 3.5 floppies....

#21 By 2332 (173.13.97.180) at 10/14/2010 5:08:30 PM
I'll be switching from Verizon to AT&T and getting the Samsung Focus along with a 32GB MicroSDHC card to bring it up to 40GB.

It pains me to switch away from Verizon, but I'll give it a shot for a phone like this. Once Verizon stops being idiots and gets on the WP7 bandwagon I'll probably switch back.

Either way, I can't wait for my WP7!

#22 By 23275 (68.117.163.128) at 10/15/2010 1:56:44 AM
#21, I feel you RMD, but when one observes the decisions AT&T is making in order to accomodate pro/consumers on MIDS, it's hard to justify the move. Our guys are pushing hard to for me to move, but I'm just not going to do it. AT&T is deprecating voice services at an alarming rate and while they are already moving mobile voice over IP, the way they are shaping is all but certain to degrade what is already poor voice service in many areas. They have no answer to LTE and when you think about it, MIDs won't come into their own without such networks and associated greater bandwidth.

For some, switching (Churn) isn't a big deal. Unlocked devices w/o long term contracts isn't a factor. For business, it's a big deal and the exist costs subject to acceleration, are too expensive. Developing for/around WP7 is better than is being told. The tools are baked well and it pains me to not be using the platform personally for day to day communications, but when it really comes down to it, voice quality and consistency matter most to business people of most types. Talking to people who use iPhones, or Android exposes how bad those devices are as regards voice. It either drops quickly, or Android even on VZW sounds like they are under water. WP7 on CDMA provides for the clearest voice and owing to the nature of the signal, it will be the most consistent. T-Mobile, while they offer good deals, has no clue about any detail regarding WP7, devices, or availability. VZW (with whom we are partners, as well as AT&T) doesn't care. They are focused on iPhone, iPad, because I suspect they have a deal where their own VCAST services are going to be allowed by Apple. Apple doesn't care, because they think that iPhone users will reject VCAST and never use it. My hope is that VZW will come to its senses and realize what Apple is all about and they'll remember how Apple allowed all to believe that AT&T was the problem with their phones - they even piled on when they knew it was their devices more than AT&T's issue. Apple will do the same to VZW and blame CDMA and again get a pass. In the end what I suspect will happen is that WP7 and VZW will dominate and Apple is going to get its brains beat in. It'll take a year, or more, but the facts are, WP7 IS THAT GOOD and VZW's LTE IS EVEN BETTER and Apple's devices are that poorly designed in terms of signal/radio transceivers. Ironically, it will be enterprise apps on WP7 that change it all. That's how good the tools are and if you're young and want to make a great living, start getting into that work as fast as you can.
